Everything was so calm.

You went home after finishing work. Rowan had the day off due to it being a weekend and surprised you with a fully cleaned house!

...Though it really was a total mess, you know he tried in his little eight-year-old heart. So, you treated him to some ice cream and put his favorite movie on the projector you had recently gotten after building him a pillow fort the size of a military bunker.

Once he had fallen asleep, you tucked him in and cleaned up the house, leaving the pillow bunker as it was in case he wanted to play in it while you were at work in the morning.

You were very grateful for Mrs. Rhodes' daughter, Wendy. Stopping by and checking in on Rowan to make sure he hadn't gotten himself in any trouble ever so often.

Rowan was often anxious around any adults that he hadn't grown familiar with, so the older teenage girl was a perfect fit to sit around and read books with him.

As you finish the dishes, you hear a knock from your door. A strange cold feeling creeps through your body as the noise is made. Your windows are closed, being it's so late and you don't want anyone peeping inside, so you can't see whoever the person knocking could be.

'Perhaps Wendy left something on accident and I didn't see?'

You clasp your hand onto the decorative handle of your front door. Opening it you find Caspen, a recently hired employee, looking very... scared...?

"Caspen? What's going on— aren't you supposed to be on closing duty today?"

He nods frantically before signing to you,

"Yes, there's something going on at the shop. You need to come this instant!"

With the petrified look on the young adult's face compelling you to move quickly, you got your shoes and a light coat on and locked your door. Both of you ran down the gravely roads to the shop.

Even from a distance you can see the mark of the snakes.

'Serpentine?! Oh, what the hell-!'

You nearly tripped over yourself at the sight of the scratched symbol embedded into your door.

Running and kicking open the door, you immediately sprint to the employee lounge, knowing exactly what they would be looking for.

Ignoring the smell of ash and dust coming from the very quickly spreading flame, you twist yourself into the space between a fallen bookshelf blocking the door.

'It's still here?!'

The wish coin lay still on the desk, completely untouched next to a couple of extra cloth table covers that you had folded earlier that day.

'The only reason they would leave it is if they thought someone already used it. Wait, the cloth! Shit- they have my scent on them, don't they?! Shit, shit, shit!'

Serpentine attacks weren't uncommon in villages like your own. The damages and such were things you could evacuate from and come back and fix within a few days. But when they came looking for artifacts like wish coins, the single reason they entered this realm, they were out for blood.

Caspen came running in with a local hunter. Lifting up the bookcase to help you out of the room.

"-The snakes that did this are still in the village! They've dug burrows and are collapsing homes beneath their surfaces!"
