KILLIAN

being a loner was pretty much how i lived my entire life. i've been home schooled since, and i never left the haunted woods unless it was very important like a life or death situation.

my bloodline was like a blessing, but a curse at the same time.

being a powerless Delacroix felt like shit. my mom's side of the family were all witches and wizards, able to cast spells and mix potions. i always wished to be able to do what they could ever since. there were times i felt jealous of Luna, but i loved my cousin with my whole heart so i did nothing but be happy for her.

my father's bloodline on the other hand was a curse. the whole reason why i couldn't use witch magic. most people know my father, Magnus Shadowsoul, for either two things.

most know him for the chaos he can cause. not only does his last name say a lot, but it also reflected his abilities with dark magic.

and some people (mostly women), know him for his very good looks which apparently can kill. so some would say he is literally 'drop dead gorgeous'.

but seriously, his dark magic and powers are the reason i was the loser who couldn't live up to his full potetial and family's legacy.

my father tried to be a good guy when he met my mother. he tried to heal souls instead of taking them, but it was no use. he eventually started growing more and more dangerous as time passed. eventually he had to isolate himself deep into the haunted forest, far away from the Delacroix's property.

he left mom and i to protect us from getting hurt, and to keep himself from taking more souls of people.

before grandma passed away, she did lots of readings, visions and crystal ball sessions to try to see if i could be a danger to the ones around me.

thankfully i hadn't inheritted any of my father's abilities. his curse wasn't passed down on me. rather, i instead got more psychic abilities such as getting gut feels and knowing something about someone who i never met.

and i was sure Nevermore was the perfect place for me to learn more about myself, my past, and my abilities.

if those abilities even existed.

"hey, mr. Shadowsoul, how's Luna? is she feeling better?", miss Thornhill asked me as i entered my first class after lunch break which happened to be botanical class.

"i actually haven't checked in on her yet. did she eat already?", i asked her since Xavier told me he was told to give miss Thornhill Luna's breakfast so she could deliver it to her dorm.

she smiled and nodded, "yeah. she looks better and less tired. why don't you check on her after classes?"

"yeah, i planned to do that.", i told her. but something in my gut felt off. like i was doubting something... or someone.

but could have easily been my lunch.

that afternoon, i did as told and went to check on Luna... with some people tagging along. those named Xavier, Enid, Divina, and Ajax. we all followed Enid to the dorms and made our way to Luna's room.

the girl with short blonde hair knocked excitedly on the door and called, "yoohoo! it's Enid. i got you a surprise!"

we all heard the door click, and Enid opened it, "hey, girlfriend! how are you?" everyone followed after Enid, entering the dorm.

"holy shit! what are you all doing here?", Luna asked, sitting in her bed. she had a bunch of Uno cards spread across the matress.

"Principal Weems allowed us to see you.", Xavier explained, his face lighting up with life as he saw my cousin. "you're playing Uno by yourself?"

"how does that work?", Ajax asked quietly.

Luna laughed, "grandma's actually playing with me."

Ajax was confused, "your grandma's still alive?"

"no, i've been dead for years already, dummy.", the voice of grandma came from the mirror where i noticed was moved from the dresser to the nightstand table next to Luna's bed. everyone gasped seeing the ghostly figure of my grandmother at the mirror. "is this some kind of high technology you witches and wizards do?", Enid asked, gulping.

i shrugged my shoulders, "no, it's just basic paranormal and ghost stuff. they can travel through portals which are formed by mirrors."

"you guys do this often?", Divina asked, approaching Luna's bedside.

Luna shrugged, "i contact my grandma every weekend."

"Killian! why haven't you talked to me much? you know how much i love you, my little cursed baby."

"grandma!", i grumbled in embarrassment. i could heard Xavier laughing silently as he sat next to Luna on the bed, placing an arm around her. Divina chuckled, Enid and Ajax snickering at grandma's nickname for me. it was both funny and painful to be called that honestly.

"oh, shush! you little idiot forgot already the basic 'throwing away the cold spell'?", grandma remarked. i rolled my eyes, "ha, unfortunately you're talking to the powerless grandchild here."

"well, i assumed you would have known such a basic spell to help heal your cousin.", grandma told me.

"your favorite grandchild? yeah, i could've.", i shot back at her slightly raising my voice but i realized my friends were still there. Luna cleared her throat, looking straight at grandma, "i think we should play another game soon. i'll get going now. bye, grandma!"

"bye, sweetie pie!", grandma said before Luna waved her fingers gently at the mirror, making the image of grandma vanish and turn back into a normal mirror. "sorry, guys, mine and Killian's grandma can be pretty crazy.", Luna apologized, leaning back onto Xavier's chest.

Enid waved her hand dismissively at Luna and i, "don't worry, i think all of our families are a little weird in their own ways."

"true.", Divina nodded at the werewolf's statement, and we all shared a laugh.

but deep down, i felt so hurt at my grandmother's words. even if she didn't mean it, it was still painful to hear your grandma call you a curse, and indirectly calling me out as powerless. a part of me wanted me to just accept it and forever be the 'useless and boring' Delacroix grandchild, but a bigger part of me wanted to prove my family wrong and that i was worthy and able to be as powerful as them.

"so, are you still good for the Poe Cup competition?", Enid asked Luna enthusiastically, bouncing with her knees up and down. my cousin nodded frantically, like it was a life or death situation, "i wouldn't miss it."

"Bianca's already making plans on how we're going to take you all down.", Divina chuckled, crossing her arms.

"oh, just you watch, Divina. the Black Cats are going to take all you down this year.", Enid said proudly, crossing her arms just as toughly as Divina who was towering over her. Xavier and Ajax rolled their eyes, disagreeing with them.

"that's what you guys said last year.", Divina pointed out.

"and i mean it this time. with Luna helping us, we are sure to win now.", Enid stated. we all turned as Luna grunted to get out of her bed. "you okay there?", most of us asked at almost the same time.

"geez, guys. it's not like i'm dying or pregnant.", Luna told everyone. Xavier held back a laugh at her words and helped her get up.

"well, either of the two is bad at our age.", Enid giggled saying this. she looked over at Luna who was pulling out clothes from her cabinet. "uh, what are you doing, Lu?"

"getting clothes obviously."

"you're supposed to be resting today.", i reminded my cousin who didn't listen and shut her closet door. "Principal Weems said you can get back to classes tomorrow."

"fuck that. i'm getting sick just staying in my room. now..." Luna asked with a smirk on her face,

"who wants to head to town?"
