Chapter V — The Truth Always Comes Out

[Tommy Lefroy — The Cause]

[23 October 2023]
[New York-Prebysterian Hospital]
[09:47]

Dain stared at his smartphone for a few seconds, frustration brewing within and with that, he exploded. He launched the device towards the wall, screaming in rage at this new problem that he had. Kane had the upper hand, and judging by the way things seemed, he was not going to stop firing off anytime soon. Dain entered the autopsy room once more, trying his best to shift his focus towards what he believed to be more important matters. "Are you okay?" Miranda asked, having heard his enraged scream seconds ago and noticing the unhinged look that sat on his face. "I'm fine," He said and he turned to the doctor.

"I assume you will have people in this area ready to catch the culprit if there is one. If anything happens, you know my number." Dain said and with that, he made his way out of the room, hoping to attend to this new issue that had developed. However, he was not aware that his enemy was multiple steps ahead. Miranda stood in the room, not sure how she was going to re-enter this room and finish what she had started. She was in too deep to turn back at this point. Miranda left her thoughts alone for a moment, turning to Orla.

"I have to go; I'll check up on you later today. Stay strong." She said, only receiving a nod in response from the girl. Her hands were clenched into fists, and what many may call psychotic thoughts ran through her mind. One of them was going to be picked and cultivated. 'I won't let them disrespect him like this, not in his death.' Orla thought and the usually perceptive Miranda was oblivious to this. She seemed far too lost in her own thoughts.

Miranda exited the room after Dain with a previously imprinted destination in mind. She was on her way to Ashton's old office, hoping to convince her superiors that they should resume with the weapons' production. Her investigation was important to her, but her job at Ares Tech was of equal importance, she could not make the Russians pay for their acts if she had no job to do so. And as such, Miranda was forced to go and grovel for the right to defend her country.

The thought made her sick. Regardless of what would happen throughout the day, however, Miranda was still determined to find out what truly happened to Ashton.

Miranda found herself at the building which had contained Ashton's office relatively soon and as she exited the car, Miranda took a deep breath, silently praying that these people were more easygoing than what she had heard. Perhaps she was being a bit too scared of the situation, but this was important to her, even if she had forgotten about the matter a day ago.

She made her way towards the entrance to see a pair of glass doors that opened automatically, but not for her. Miranda looked down to catch a sight she had not expected. "Kane?" She said, and upon noticing her Kane smiled in response. "Miranda, it's been quite a while. How are you?" He asked, and Miranda seemed a bit entranced by his smile. "I've been better, not gonna lie, but I've also been through worse. So, it is what it is." Miranda said. "So, what brings you here?"

"I'm here to show up and pay my respects to Ashton's colleagues. When I left, him and I didn't see eye-to-eye but even I wouldn't wish something like this on him." Kane said, staring at the ground and fidgeting with his fingers. Miranda felt a bit of pity for the man.

To her, it sounded as if Kane had been looking to reconcile with Ashton, but it now seemed too late. "I see, so you knew him too. I'm here to just negotiate a few things regarding business." Miranda said, hoping not to reveal the fact she was here to beg. However, it seemed that Kane was a few steps ahead.
