about two days after being out in the woods, matt and i haven't talked about what happened that night. i think it was a one time thing, we were both going through things in our heads. and being in a end-of-the-world situation everyone wants to hookup here and there.
we had to go to a pharmacy so we could get some more insulin for amélie though. matt stood outside to keep watch while amélie and i went inside, i insisted him keeping tobi but he refused. while inside i rummaged through the cabinets. it smelt like death in the pharmacy, but instead of worrying we just found what we needed and continued. but we heard a sudden shot outside. i quickly changed amélie's insulin and rushed outside to see matt on the ground clenching onto his side. two men stood in front of him their guns pointed at amélie and i. "stay." i said to tobi who was ready to pounce.
he sat, glaring at the men ready to attack when said. they looked at me up and down. my breath hitched nervously. "you with us." the bigger man with scruffy facial hair, and dark black hair with almost black eyes had said motioning for me to go in the pharmacy. i looked over at amélie then to matt, he shook his head no. i knew what they wanted. and i knew what i had to do.
i nodded yes to them. i had a plan. i walked inside one of their barrels against my back. they didn't know i had a gun stashed in the pharmacy as soon as i heard the gunshot earlier. after walking further in the bigger one came up behind me cover my mouth before slamming me against a wall. "scream and he'll slit your throat following with that little girl. you hear me?" he said venom flying off his tongue.
he then shoved me down on the counter the other one held my arms above my head his knife at my throat. the bigger one pulled down my pants discarding them on the blood stained white tile. he then grabbed the knife and grazed it down my leg, "move and i'll stab." he said the point against my skin, he pulled my underwear down, my eyes burned with tears as he you know. i looked up at the guy holding my hands together then the rapist. i stayed silent for my sisters sake. i then rose up head butting the grunting man, managing to have my hands hit the other guys chin sending him stumbling back. the bigger man collided his knife with my thigh. i reach in the bowl of suckers pulling out my gun i aimed it at the bigger man the bullet went between his eyes.
the other now had his barrel against my head. i knew what was next. "cinderella." i said allowed, just loud enough for amélie to hear, "what is that the little girls name or something?" the man said with a dark chuckle. then bam. i thought i had died for a second but then i looked over to see amélie i stood up quickly pulling up my underwear.
wincing at the sudden stance i fell to the ground. "sissy." amélie said dropping the gun and running over to me. but next thing i knew there was the sound of gravel squishing "alright help me up." i said reaching out. she was a strong girl, she grabbed her gun before we stumbled out of the pharmacy. military transport was pulling through. i looked at matt who was dying on the ground. "get on the bus." one demanded.
"can you help him up?" i asked about matt, "only you girls and the dog." the man stated firmly. "no! he goes too! he's dying! you have to do something!" i begged. "in or die." the man said harshly this time. "you can't force us!" i shouted. "in or die." he stated.
i looked at matt with tears. "go." he said quietly. i gathered enough strength to get down on the ground with him, my hands cupped his face, "i'm sorry." i said tears rolled down my face, "don't be, i was lucky enough to know you amazing girls." he said back with a smile, i leaned forward placing a kiss on his lips. "just say you forgive me please." i said quietly after pulling away. "i forgive you." he said back quietly.
"ma'am let's get moving." the man in the cameo uniform says. i sighed before pushing up on my wounded leg feeling like i was going to pass out. i grabbed the leash to tobi. "i love you." i said softly, i knew we hadn't known each other for long but when you had been alone for how long i was alone, no one but a bitchy teen and a crying five-year-old a romance felt good, and i think i truly loved him. "i love you too." matt said softly with a smile.
i walked onto the bus not looking back i couldn't get myself to do it. "wait!" he shouted as i stepped up. "come here." he said. "hurry." the military man said, i nodded my head limping back over to matt trying not to lose balance. he reach out, it was a dog tag. "remember me. and if i could stand up i'd put it on you myself." he said his palm open.
another tear rolled down my cheek as i took the necklace, i couldn't say anything so i just walked away. i regret it, but what's the point of wishing you could change the past when you just can't. after i sat on the bus seat i put the dog tag around my neck before passing out from loss of blood.
