The train ride home was long. Kat was able to find an empty compartment so she wouldn't have to awkwardly sit with a group of people that didn't want her there.

The train came to a stop and the students flooded out of the compartments. Most kids were usually happy to be home, to be with their families. Kat liked breaks only for the sole fact that there was no more school.

Kat looked around the station for her mother. She had two ideas of how her mother would look, 1, she would look dreadfully miserable because her father left, or 2, she would move on completely and be exactly the same as always. Just then she spotted her mother walking into the station in an elegant pink dress. She looked fine.

"Hello, mom." Kat greeted first this time, just in case.

"Hi Kat." Her mother smiled and gave her a small hug.

Kat was confused. Hugs were happening too often and it made her feel off the edge, was she pretending she was fine? Or was she truly feeling okay?

The car ride home was quiet but not the cold, awkward type of quiet. It was just, quiet. The two finally got home and her mother took the bags out of the car.

"Are you hungry?" Her mother asked her.

"A little," Kat answered before grabbing the bags from her mom's hand.

"I'll whip you something." Her mom let out a small smile.

Kat went up to her small but comfortable room. It was simple and some would say it was too small for their taste but Kat found it more comfortable that way. There weren't many bright decorations but her light blue comforter and beige pillows made her room look cozy. After laying her luggage on her bed she went back downstairs and saw her mother setting the table.

She quietly went over to the kitchen and helped her mom bring the cups and the water and sat on the small, lonely table. Soon her mother joined her at the table and the two started eating in silence, which was soon broken by her mother.

"We're not going to spend Christmas Eve here this year." Her mother said and Kat's head tilted in confusion. "We're spending it over at the Potter's." She continued, her voice sounding calm. She obviously had no idea how surprised the girl was to hear the news.
