Several years ago...
"Henry, wait! Please don't go! I'm begging you!" Emma's mother cried, running after her husband, Henry Jekyll, who was walking out the front door.
"Please don't leave me Henry!" she continued to cry.
Henry was just about to cross the threshold and walk into the rain when Mary, Emma's mother, grabbed him by the arm.
"Please." she begged.
He stared into her dark eyes and sighed.
"You have to stay here and watch her, Mary." he told her, shaking his head.
She gave him a desperate look.
"How am I supposed to do that? Without thinking that she might kill me in my sleep?" she asked.
Henry sighed again, more solemnly this time. The rain pattered outside and soaked the back of Henry's coat as he pressed his top hat tighter on his head and looked up into his wife's teary eyes.
"You'll find a way. But whatever you do, make sure she stays away from science. It's a dangerous thing. I should know..." he hesitated as he glanced past Mary's shoulder, trying to see if his daughter was standing behind Mary and watching them.
He met her gaze again and spoke more quietly, despite not seeing his daughter standing anywhere near them.
"You should understand, Mary, that I thought science was my friend, until..." he hesitated before continuing to speak.
"Today was something that was not supposed to happen. She's not even four, and yet, I can't help but feel like I'm going to be missing out on all her birthdays from now on." he finished, and sighed.
Mary only watched him in silence and glanced at his baggage which he held in his right hand. His knuckles turned white and she could almost see the veins bulging out of his skin.
"I think it would be best to leave her with you. After all, two of a kind living together never ends well."
He glanced down at the floor before lifting his head to meet Mary's eyes once more.
"Please take good care of her, Mary. I will come back when the time is right, when she is old enough to understand what she is. It will not be easy for her. She will grow accustomed to the good that the other part gives her, but I'm afraid that it won't be long before it comes out and makes a total wreck of things." he said.
Mary cocked her head to the side and crossed her arms.
"What do you mean by that, Henry?" she asked, curiously.
Henry sighed and glanced over his shoulder to see a couple walking outside in the rain, holding up an umbrella and chatting. Henry looked back to see his wife's face full of worry.
"Henry?" she said, her voice taking on a worried tone.
Henry sighed and closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry to have to leave you with Hyde's spawn, but it's the only way to ensure that it makes her see that there is more bad in the world than good. But one day, if I- if he ever gets his hands on her, I swear I will-" he stopped himself, and cleared his throat.
"I will stop him. But you have to understand Mary, it was never my intention to bestow such hardness on you. I don't want to have to leave you, but if it's for Emma... and for you, I will." Henry explained, his voice barely above a whisper.
Mary leaned forward and placed a hand on his cheek.
She stared into his brown eyes and whispered: "You better come back, Henry. Or I will kill you myself if I ever get the chance."
