Cold wind licked harshly around Eris' ears and bare neck. She was again perching on top of the roof of Ophelia Hall, having climbed from a stairwell behind a locked door, up until she could sit, watching over the entire school grounds and most of the forest. The lock had been easily cracked.
It was Sunday. Every last one of the remaining students of this freaky school would arrive today.
The cars were already multiplying in front of the main entrance. Parents and siblings were hugging the teenagers, that would be staying here, saying their emotional goodbyes. Some helped bring in the luggage, some shoved home-backed goods into their children's pockets and others simply waved and drove off again.
At around two pm two shuttles arrived, offloading at least fifty students at once, whose parent apparently hadn't been able to make it.Eris could feel a storm of dread and annoyance already building up inside her chest, giving her a headache. So many students. So many loud, stupid young kids, excited to be here.
Just then something caught Eris' eye and she craned her neck to see better. She'd spotted a head of red hair bouncing between the cars, but as soon as she'd seen it she noticed it wasn't Marilyn. Just another student.
Eris groaned internally. She was getting much too obsessed with her teacher and it wasn't doing her any good. She couldn't stop thinking about the older woman. Her dreams were now either haunted by the murky forest whispering incoherently at her or they were spent in hot, frustrating make out sessions with the red-head. Either way Eris awoke most nights sweaty and out of breath. She hadn't seen Miss Thornhill again after their passionate kiss in the secret library behind Edgar Allan Poe and Eris had the distinct feeling her teacher was now avoiding her.
Well, Eris thought grimly, she can't avoid me forever.
And she was right, of course. Tomorrow, term would start at Nevermore Academy and Eris had seen on the little time table she'd received from Principal Weems, that one of her lessons on Mondays would be botanical science.Sighing, Eris lit herself a cigarette. Gazing over the heads in the yard and on school grounds, she spotted her sister sneaking around, trying to figure out who to best befriend first. Jocelyn has informed her that she was going to have a roommate named, Marie-Anne. A vampire who had attended the school for three decades now and was always a sort of guide for new students, as she knew more about the school than even some of the staff did. Jocelyn had been in awe at the news.
Eris could already spot the different groups of students. The friendships forged, starting years ago.
Gangs, Cliques and couples.
One girl with piercing blue eyes and a boy with shoulder length hair stepped put of the shuttle, hand in hand, and were immediately surrounded by people, like a strong pole pulling all the little magnets to itself.
Jocelyn too stalked a little closer, noticing the attention this couple got. Eris had learned to spot these groups and stear clear of them. They brought nothing but trouble, peer pressure and unnecessary prejudice. But her sister sought them out like the marshmallows in a bowl of Lucky Charms.
A few lonely-birds were swirling around the groups, not belonging to anybody, not wanted by anyone.Eris slowly got up and stalked down the roof, to see better. The cigarette was burning away cheerfully in the strong wind swirling around the castle. Standing over everybody Eris finally spotted Miss Thornhill. She was greeting students happily, shaking hands, making small talk, waving and smiling. Eris thought she saw the teacher scanning the crowd searchingly, as though looking for somebody in particular. Eris wondered who. Did she have a favourite student? Or did a special member of the staff arrive today too?
She sighed. It was frustrating, not knowing where she stood with the beautiful older woman. Eris couldn't stop thinking about her.
We shouldn't be doing this, she had said to her after that steamy kiss they shared. It was confusing her.Eris frowned. A blonde girl with colourful streaks in her hair had spotted her and pointed up to the roof, pulling the attention of a group of students onto her.
Soon every head on the Nevermore school-grounds was turned up, facing her wonderingly.
