CHAPTER 1
WELCOME TO NEVERMORE

ROYAL V. DEIRDRE always loved being a witch. Because that was a part of who she was and she embraced that part of herself. But wielding such great power made others afraid of her and what she could do. And that made her friendless.

So every year, on her birthday, Royal would wish for friends. For her to one day be with her kind, outcasts like her. Hence, when she received a letter that she was accepted into Nevermore academy mid-term, Royal was overjoyed.

She couldn't stop thinking about what her life would be like at Nevermore academy. Royal imagined vampires roaming the halls, mermaids swimming in the water and werewolves howling during a full moon.

But mostly she imagined other witches like herself practising their spells and brewing potions in secret rooms where their coven would gather.

With each minute that passed, Royal's excitement to join Nevermore academy grew.

"Do you think there'll be shapeshifters?" Regan, Royal's brother asked as he helped Royal to pack her things.

Royal was to set off for Nevermore in 1 and a half hours and yet she had just started packing so she asked her brother for help. And so the two siblings were in Royal's bedroom, picking out and packing whatever Royal might need.

Royal's face lit up as she thought about her brother's question. "I hope there will be! I've always wanted to meet a shapeshifter.." She exclaimed, wondering if her roommate at Nevermore academy would be a shapeshifter.

Regan smiled when he saw how excited his sister was. He turned his attention back to Royal's bags and then spotted a dark red dress in Royal's luggage. Regan took the dress out and frowned. He then showed the dress to Royal. "And when exactly will you have the chance to wear this?"

"There might be a prom night there. You never know," said Royal.

"I'm pretty sure there's no prom in a school for outcasts."

"Like I said, you never know."

Regan shrugged and folded his sister's dress nicely, before putting it back into Royal's luggage.

When the time came for Royal to set off for Nevermore, she couldn't help but already miss Scotland, despite all the times when she was mistreated.

Sonya Deirdre, Royal's mother, helped her daughter to put her bags into the trunk of the car.

"It's alright Mama... I can handle it myself," Royal said, smiling at her mother, gently taking the bags out of her mother's hand.

Sonya, being the fierce yet very loving mother she is, snatched Royal's bag out of her hand. "Shut up and let me help my daughter one more time before she leaves her poor mother behind," said Sonya.

"Mama, you make it sound as if I'm leaving you forever..." Royal sighed.

After everything was packed and ready, Royal brought her mother into a warm hug. "Goodbye my little carnation.." said Sonya, letting go, smiling at her daughter through teary eyes.

"Goodbye Mama," Royal said.

She walked over to her other mother, Diana Deirdre, who kissed Royal on the forehead. "Please take care of yourself, my sweet princess..." Diana said, looking at Royal lovingly.
