CHAPTER 3
A GIFTROYAL AND ESMERALDA were unpacking Royal's clothes and personalising Royal's side of the dorm room when Esmeralda noticed how all of Royal's clothes are mainly red and black.
"Interesting choice of colours.." Esmeralda remarked. "Usually people go for more colourful themes."
"I find those colours pleasing to the eye." Royal replied while placing some photographs of her family on her bedside table. It had been less than 24 hours since Royal had last seen her beloved family and yet she was already missing them like crazy. Being the sentimental girl she is, Royal felt tears well up in her eyes.
Esmeralda noticed this and placed a hand on her roommate's shoulder, looking at Royal's family pictures. "I'm sure they miss you a lot.." The vampire said.
Royal wiped her tears away before they fell. "It hasn't even been a week and look at me, I'm already such a mess." Royal chuckled awkwardly. Esmeralda looked at Royal with sadness for her roommate in her eyes and gave the witch a small hug. Royal was glad she had a kind person like Esmeralda as her roommate.
Just then, the two got a knock on their door, interrupting the two girls' hug. Royal reluctantly pulled away from Esmeralda. The vampire walked over to the door and opened it, revealing an Indian lady around the age of 30.
"Hello Esmeralda," greeted the lady.
Esmeralda smiled. "Hello Professor Kumar."
"Oh spare the formalities dearie. It's just Saanvi." Professor Kumar said lightheartedly. She looked past Esmeralda's shoulder and saw Royal who was staring at them and wondering who the lady was.
"Hi! You must be Royal Deirdre, one of the two new students. I'm Professor Saanvi Kumar, your dorm mom. But you can just call me Saanvi." Professor Kumar said, shaking Royal's hand.
Royal smiled. "It's wonderful to meet you, Saanvi."
"I heard that you're a witch. Is that true? I've always wanted to meet a witch, but they disappeared all the way back in the 18th century." asked Professor Kumar.
"I am a witch but I highly doubt I'm as good as you would expect me to be."
"Oh please- Spare the modesty. I'm sure you're more talented than you believe yourself to be."
"I-"
"Now I trust you are getting along well with Esme." Professor Kumar interrupted. "After all, who wouldn't? Also, I got you a little gift."
"A gift?"
"Of course! Every dorm mom needs to get their new student a gift. I heard you like red, particularly blood red so I got you a little something in that colour." Professor Saanvi said, rummaging through her bag full of stuff. "Now where did I put it? Oh it's here. Your gift, my lovely Royal." She said, handing Royal a red gift box.
"Thank you Saanvi for the gift." Royal said graciously.
"You're welcome dearie. Go on, open it!"
Royal smiled and untied the golden ribbon which decorated and tied the gift box. Once the ribbon was untied, Royal opened the gift box, revealing the last thing she expected to be given to her as a welcome gift.
"It's a pen... How lovely.. Thank you Saanvi. I'll be sure to use it during lessons." said Royal, staring at the red pen. A part of her was slightly disappointed but still grateful.
"Oh don't be silly!" Professor Kumar chuckled. "Why the hell would I give you something so useless like a pen? Twist the top part of it clockwise."
Royal followed Saanvi's words and twisted the top part of the pen, and slowly, a blood red penknife came out of the end of the top part. A smile tugged on Royal's lips. Now that was what Royal was expecting.
"A knife..." Royal grinned, throwing the knife up in the air before catching it and playfully stabbing the air with it.
"Not just any knife dearie. It can cut absolutely anything in the world! And even pick locks. But don't use it for mischief! That is highly discouraged." Professor Saanvi said, winking at Royal who grinned, immediately understanding what she was trying to say.
"Also, there are some rules that you'll need to follow. Lights off at 10, no ear piercing music and no boys ever." Professor Kumar declared. "And definitely no girls either. I'm looking at you Esmeralda." She said, pointing at a blushing Esmeralda.
"Oh come on! It's not like I'm gonna do anything weird.." The vampire said sheepishly.
Professor Kumar rolled her eyes while Royal stifled her laugh.
"And what about Jericho?" Royal asked
"Passes to Jericho are a privilege, not a right. It's a quick 25 minute walk either that or you can take a shuttle on the weekends. If you ever go to Jericho, please don't cause any trouble and damage Nevermore's reputation. The locals are already so wary of us as it is."
"Right, well I better get going, still have lots of work to be done. Oh and don't forget that the two of you have fencing class in an hour's time!" Professor Kumar said as she walked out of their dorm room.
"I just met her a few minutes ago and damn she's already my favourite teacher," exclaimed Royal once Saanvi had left.
"Welcome to the 'We stan Saanvi' club." Esmeralda smirked.
Royal nodded in acknowledgement. "Also, who's the other new student? First principal Weems mentioned it and now Professor Kumar, I mean Saanvi, mentioned it too."
"Oh right," Esmeralda said. "I don't exactly know who they are but I heard she's a girl and Ajax, the guy with the beanie if you remember, told me she was really scary. Ajax said and I quote, 'she's a living black and white filter'. Black and white, imagine that.. Hopefully she's not as scary as Ajax says she is."
Royal thought about this. "Black and white huh? Seems to me she's probably really cool and chill."
"I'll trust your judgement on this one. Anyway, do you have your fencing gear?"
