Looking out over the half empty workshop I furrowed my brows. Scott was out on break, Judy was on vacation, leaving me practically no one to talk to. I knew some of the few elves that could go on vacation but not well, and after not seeing my boyfriend for over a month I was curious to see where he had been.
"Snickerdoodle!" Bernard called as I turned around he hugged me quick kissing my head with a smile. "And where have you been? Day and night you are constantly somewhere" I said crossing my arms. "Well I've been training new elves, you know a majority of the elves retire every Christmas so I get new elves to come help" Bernard said. "Can I help you train a few?" I asked him as he looked a bit worried. "I don't know I mean- I barley even let Curtis in on this job.. Are you sure?" He asked me for verification as I smiled. "How hard could training a few elves be?" I asked him as he sighed.
Helping Bernard set up he pinned a couple medals through his sweater. "Really? Is that necessary?" I asked as he nodded. "I'm the drill Sargent. It's only fitting" He said as I just filed my arms with a smile. Watching the young elves come in I awed seeing them. "I remember my training, I was so little then" I said to Bernard as he kept a smile looking at the group of newcomers.
"You're all here for one reason, to become one of Santa's little helpers. But in order to do that. You have to go through me! And of course Snickerdoodle." Bernard said as I waved to them.
"So what does it mean, to be an elf?" Bernard asked them as I stood beside him quietly. Looking around Bernard's eyes landed on a young elf in yellow. "What's your name cadet?" He asked. "Timothy, Sir." Timothy said nervously. "And what does being an elf mean to you?" Bernard asked.
"We make.. toys?" Timothy asked nervously. "That's right!" Bernard congratulated. "We do, but the meaning of the word is far greater than that, Let's see.. Miss Snickerdoodle, do you happen to know what being an elf means?" He asked me as I smiled.
"Being an elf represents a dream, A lifestyle! A passion, a purpose, a gift, a hope! A fellowship, a reason to live!" I said listing it off with my fingers. "It's not just about making toys, we make dreams come true. We.. are dream merchants" I smiled the elves cheering as Bernard looked proud. "Nice Miss Head Elf" He whispered as I nudged him "Learned from the best" I said.
With the kids still cheering Bernard laughed "Slow down, you aren't there yet. First, you're going to have to pass a few tests" Bernard warned. "So. Are you ready?" He asked them.
"Sir, Yes Sir!" The elves shouted. "It's time to see what you're made of" Bernard smiled. "You ready?" He asked again "Sir, Yes Sir!" The kids shouted louder "These kids are freaky" I stated making Bernard laugh. Moving to the toy deck I stood beside a small elf who's name was Molly. Looking at her poor ribbon skills I gently picked it up and unwrapped the box. "Don't worry, You'll get the hang of it but try again" I told her. Watching her do it again but fail Bernard came over and unwrapped it again. "Christmas Eve, I believe it was Nineteen-Hundred and Fifty-Five! Dubuque, Iowa. Santa's making his way down a veeery dusty chimney when..
Crash!
Boom!
Zing!"
Every sound effect Molly and I jumped with fear. "A bow catches a rusty nail and slips off. Santa looses his footing and plummets all the way down the chimney and gets wedged between brick and cement and can't move! Now... we don't want that to happen again now do we?" He asked as she shook her head. "Sir, No Sir"
