"Once that door closes, it stays closed."

A man said, looking at all of them tightly, clutching at the barrel of this shotgun. The quiet ticking of an analog clock among the silence of the room. The man's eyes bore into each of them, his expression unwavering. Empty chairs neatly tucked into their places—not a single soul but the man could be seen in the room.

'Kinda creepy.'

"Where is everybody, the staff?"

Another tick from the clock in the eerie silence, and the man sighed, putting down the gun aimed at their heads.

"I'm it."

"But we heard a voice, a female voice, right?" Lori asked aloud, and the man's gaze fell to his feet as he nodded.

"It's an artificial intelligence. It's just me here, trying to keep things running as best I can." Unwavering silence graced the group again. The man stepped down from the ledge without another word and walked past them to the doors of an elevator. Letting the weight move from one leg to the other, she hesitated to move, as did the rest of the group. Rick took the first step forward, urging his family behind him, leaving the rest of the group to fall in line.

Sitting on the stool in the laboratory with Ollie on her knee, who didn't seem to mind as long as she kept bouncing her knee, the man who let them in called himself Dr. Jenner, one of the last people to be in the CDC. Julia rolled up the sleeves of her arms. Jenner pinched the meat of her bicep and felt the sting of the needle. She winced slightly but kept her gaze fixed on a poster.

The price of their entrance was a simple blood test, one she didn't mind giving.

Jenner put the tube of her blood into the case as he scribbled something on the clipboard.

"Let's get you guys something to eat."

Julia blew on the noodles until they were cool enough for Ollie to take a bite, wapping them up with the end of her fork. The rest of the group had indulged in a nice case of boxed wine they found in the cabits. Loud laughter and shouting from drunk men—this was the happiest Julia had seen them in a long time.

"It seems to me we haven't thanked our host yet."

"He's more than a host!" Daryl shouted, shoving his drink out into the air and the almost full glass spilled drops over the side. The group cheered in as well , raising their glasses in a toast to the doctor.

"When are you finally going to explain what went down, Doc? Why aren't there any other doctors around?" Shane blurted out.

The cheers stopped immediately, as everyone seemed to hold their breath, waiting for the doctor's response. Julia sighed. It was nice to pretend the world had gone to sh*t outside and if they could have pretended just a little longer.
