                       Chapter 5

Of all the crazy things Julia had ever seen, seeing a building blown to bits right before her eyes was something to behold. Jenner was dead, and Jaccpui was dead, alive just hours ago.

Following behind Rick's trunk and the RV as they came up on the highway, Julia saw thousands of cars piling up on the road ahead. The RV slowly made its way through the tangled mess of vehicles. Julia watched as Glenn became worried and saw how tightly he was holding the steering wheel, making his knuckles turn white.

"Geez."

A graveyard of cars, some off the road in the grass, and a tiny gray car flipped over in the median. She couldn't bear the uneasy feeling in her chest as little hairs stood up on the back of her neck and arms. Reaching over and placing a hand on Glenn's shoulder, offering a reassuring squeeze.

"Just follow Rick's truck." She said, scooting up the passenger seat and pointing ahead. Glenn nodded, taking a deep breath before pressing on the gas pedal. As they drove past a couple of cars, it was hard not to notice the bodies rotting inside some of the cars.

The RV pulled over and parked right there in the middle of the road in front of them. Glenn parked the van and stepped out to check on the issue, strolling alongside the RV with Rick right behind him. She leaned her head against the window once more, waiting for Glenn to return and fill her in on the plan. The group stepped out of their vehicles one at a time, glancing around as they did. Hearing soft little mews from behind, Julia spun around to find Ollie waking up from a nap, stretching his tiny mouth wide for a big yawn. She unclipped her seatbelt, swung the door open, and stepped out, making her way around to slide the other door open.

"Hey, little man." She smiled, letting her cheeks perk up as the lines in her face creased with ease. Quickly unbuckling him from the car seat, she scooped him up, holding him close. Feeling his bottom, she could tell he needed a diaper change. Taking Ollie to the back of their van, she popped open the trunk, laying him down on the van bed. Digging out the diaper bag, she ruffled around in the bag until she pulled out a diaper and wet wipes.

As she fastened the fresh diaper around Ollie, she heard footsteps approaching from behind. She heard the recognizable crunch of boots on gravel, which made her look up, and there was Rick.

"The RV hose broke, and Dale's got Glenn working on it right now. He asked me to inform you." Rick sighed, running a hand through his hair, clearly feeling stressed. She nodded to show she got it and appreciated the warning, then swiftly turned her focus back to Ollie to wrap up the diaper change.

As she balanced baby Ollie on her hip and observed the sea of abandoned cars in their path, Julia remarked, "That's awesome, but what's the plan for all these cars? There's no way we're getting through this mess."
