I felt a hand on my shoulder. I expected it to be Nancy, but she was already with her brother. I looked up. It was Steve.
"Nancy told me what she thinks happened." He said. I didn't respond. I looked to the ground.
"No.." I said again. "Not her.. not now." I cried. I leaned back onto Steve.
"I know.. I know. It's hard.. but it'll be okay. I promise." He said.
"No, it won't! I yelled I broke free from his arms and stood up. "My sister.. El... no! She's dead! Our plans! I might as well just go home!"
"I'm so sorry.." he said. Nancy came over and hugged me.
"She sacrificed herself. They said she just.. vanished." Nancy said.
"So.. so she could still be alive?" I asked. Nancy nodded. "Let's go! We have to go test it out!" I yelled.
"Wait! They found Will. We're going to go see him first, then, we can go do your freaky little search thing." Nancy said.
We fit 5 in Jonathans car, but I had to go with Steve. I got in.
"You know, I have a shit ton of questions for you." He said as we drove.
"Do you?" I said, sniffling slightly. "Like what?"
"Well, number One would be, what the hell was that?" He asked. "And number Two, how the hell did you, like, throw him with your mind? That was, like, awesome. You are awesome."
"I can answer those two right now." I said. "Number One, that was a monster. It comes from an alternate dimension. And Number Two, I was born for it. Hawkins Lab chose 12 kids for this program to create weapons. I was one of them." He looked at me. I laughed slightly. "Yeah, uhm, there's a big story in that."
"So.. this girl. Your sister. She was one of them?" He asked.
"Eleven." I said. "She was number Eleven."
"What number are you?" He asked.
"One." I answered. "Well, technically, One point Two. There was one more before me. Papa failed to tame him." I said. "I think that's why he favored me. I was the first to submit to him."
We had reached the hospital. "We can continue the interrogation later. Come on, let's go see Will." I said.
We parked then followed the others in. "So, you can do things with your mind." Steve said as we walked. "I gotta say, that's new for me."
I laughed. Despite his tendencies to be a raging dick, he was kind of funny.
Once we reached the waiting room, Steve and I sat next to each other. I yawned. I felt my body grow heavy. I hadn't realized how tired I was.
I fell asleep. I was awoken by someone grabbing my arm. I opened my eyes.
"Y/N." Dr. Johnson said. My eyes widened in horror.
"No." I said. "Please.. no." I whispered.
"Don't worry.. I don't want to take you back.. I just want to warn you. They will be coming for you. Hide." She said. "They said that Papa was dead. I don't know if it's true, or not. But watch out. They are coming." She handed me a folder. "This contains paperwork. A new birth certificate, a new name. A new identity. I suggest you wait a year before resuming life in Hawkins, if you choose to stay here."
I nodded. She walked out of the room. I stood up and went to the bathroom. I threw cold water in my face. When I went back to the waiting room, Steve was up.
"So, where am I taking you?" He asked. I hadn't thought of that.
"Shit." I said. "I don't know. I don't have a house anymore."
"You know.. my parents don't always pay attention to me.. so, if you want, I could set you up in my attic for a little while." Steve offered.
"How about for one or two nights, then I find somewhere else." I said.
"Sound's good to me." He responded. He drove me to his house.
Steve made it feel.. safe. I don't know how. At the end of my two days, I just left. I left a note saying how thankful I was to him, and that'd I'd be keeping an eye on him.
I walked to Robin's house. I had stolen her address the night before from the school records. I knocked.
Robin was the one to answer. "Oh, uh, hi." She said.
"Hi." I replied. "I'm sorry for crashing, but uhm, I was just wondering.. if I could, maybe, I don't know.. stay with you?"
"So odd." she said. "Yeah. Come on in."
I stayed there for awhile.
She taught me things. How to be happy, how to be a normal teenager.
I loved Robin. She was my best friend.
On Christmas Eve, she gave me a gift.
"I'm sorry, I didn't get you anything." I said.
"I didn't expect you to. Don't worry." She said. "Open it!"
I unwrapped it gently. It was a Walkman. "I even bought you some tapes!" She exclaimed. She had introduced me to music.
I hugged her. "Thank's Robin! You are literally the best." I told her.
"You're welcome." She replied.
The best thing about Robin, is she didn't ask too many questions about why I snuck out so often, or why I even needed to stay there. Why I had no where else to go.
That night, I snuck out. I went to the Wheeler's first. I watched Will and Jonathan safely get to their car. I smiled as they drove away. I looked through the window and smiled. Steve and Nancy.
Some part of me hated this. I couldn't tell why. I saw Steve glance at me. I smiled and waved, then vanished into the night. I went to the back of the house and softly knocked on the door to the basement. Mike opened it.
I sat down where El used to sit and tried to reach her. Nothing. I has found nothing since she'd gone missing. Either she was too far out of reach, or she was dead.
Mike looked at me. I gave him a hug. "We'll find her." I told him. I didn't know if that was true or not. I left the house later, then went back to Robin's and went to sleep.
A few more months passed, before I left. The night before, I let her know how grateful I was. She was amazing.
But I had to go. Something felt wrong. Maybe they were on to me. I decided to just, live in the woods for awhile. I always checked on everyone. Always.
Nancy and Steve stayed together. I figured out the emotion I was feeling was slight jealousy. I didn't know why I was jealous. They were good together.
We eventually started to hang out, the three of us. I decided it was safe enough to go back to school. I did all that bullshit you have to do to enroll, then went.
It was nice. I remained in the woods, but the Wheeler's would let me do laundry and shower with no questions asked.
Robin had a few questions as to why I left, but I didn't give her a straight answer. After awhile, she stopped asking.
One afternoon, we were sitting in the field as boys played football.
"I just don't understand why you hang out with him. I mean, he's such a dick." Robin said. I laughed.
"I don't know." I said. "He's gotten better, I think. Nancy's changed him. Just a little."
"And how do you feel about that?" She asked. "That Nancy is changing him?"
"Fine..?" I said. She looked at me with a smile.
"Really?" She asked.
"Why wouldn't I be?" I asked. She shrugged.
"You look at him like he looks at her sometimes." She said.
"I do not."
"Do too."
"Do not!"
She laughed. "Whatever you say."
"Besides. Even if I did.." I started. "He's with Nance. And they're like.. perfect for each other."
"I don't know.. I personally think Jonathan and Nancy would be cute together." Robin said.
I looked down.
"I'm sure you'll get over this Harrington fascination." She said. "Then, you can focus on someone else."
I smiled at her. "Maybe." I said.
After a few more months, the Byers took me in.
"Honestly, you don't have to do this.." I told Joyce.
"I would have done it sooner.. if you had come to me." She said. "You can stay."
Those were the best days. The days with a mother.
