Like I said, life moved on. Steve taught me how to drive.
"Carefully let off the break." He said. I slowly removed my food. The car started to move.
"Hey, look! I'm driving." I said.
"Okay, good. Now, press the gas." He said. I pressed the gas pedal gently. The car moved quicker. "Good girl."
He continued to direct me slowly to his house. His parents were off on a business trip, so he wanted to hang out there for awhile.
I panicked a little when there was another car. They honked at me for going 5 miles under the speed limit. "Sorry, sorry." I said.
Steve reached his hand out the window and flipped them off. "Don't be sorry. You're doing great." He said. The car sped passed, flipping us off as he drove by. "That was an asshole move."
We managed to safely make it to his house. I parked in the driveway, then turned the car off. "You did amazing." He said. I smiled. He got out of the car and opened the door for me. We walked in together, and headed up his stairs.
Once we reached his room, he picked me up and set me on his bed. "Is this okay?" He asked. I nodded. I took my shirt off. "Are you sure?"
"Yes." I replied. He kissed me quickly, but still so gently. I put my hands under his shirt. He took it off, then continued to lay me down on the bed.
He sat over me. I stared at him as he undid my jeans. He looked at me for approval.
I nodded. He took them off, and went back to kissing me.
He moved down to my neck. His mouth left more marks.
"Do you want me?" He asked. I nodded. His hands undid the clasp of my bra. "Is this okay?"
"Yes." I said. He removed it. He kissed the side of my chest where the line was from it being tight around me.
He looked up at me and started to undo his belt. He waited for the word no, but it never came. He removed my underwear, and then removed his own. He pulled the blanket over us.
"Are you sure?" He asked. I nodded. He stuck himself in me, gently. I moaned softly. "Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yes." I replied. The entire time, he praised me.
"You're doing so good, Love." He'd say. "Are you sure you're okay? You're perfect." He breathed loudly in my ear. He kissed my neck softly. I gasped, trying to keep my noised to a minimum. "Good Girl." He said.
His body collapsed onto mine, but he made sure he didn't land hard on me. He rested his head on my shoulder, his body shaking. His skin was soaked from the sweat.
"You're shaking." I said.
"I'll be okay." He said. I played with his hair, which was dampened with sweat. He crawled off of me and let me wrap myself around him. He stroked my thighs for a few minutes, then I felt him put my underwear back me.
He sat me up to put a t-shirt he grabbed from his closet, and put on his boxers and sweatpants. He collapsed with me in
When we woke up, I was in minor pain. Steve was still asleep, but he was off to the side. I sat up slightly. He lifted his head up.
"What time is it..?" He asked. I looked at the clock.
"Noon." I replied.
"How do you feel? Any pain?" He asked.
"There's a little.." I replied.
"Is it too bad? Do you need anything?" He asked. I shook my head. He stood up and took his sweatpants off, switching them for jeans. We heard a knock on the door. "Oh, shit!" He yelled. "I promised Henderson I'd give him a ride up to Weathertop so he could set up Cerebro."
He handed me the rest of my clothes. "Wear that shirt." He said.
"Why?" I asked. I looked down at what he put on me.
"Because, you look hot in it." He said, winking at me. He helped me clasp my bra, then I finished getting dressed. He kissed my forehead and we walked down the stairs.
I groaned slightly.
"Are you in too much pain?" He asked. I shook my head. I tucked the front of my shirt in, as it hung down and looked more like a dress. I put my shoes and socks on and we walked out the door. Dustin was already in the car.
Steve opened the door and put me in the back seat.
"So, you're going to talk to Suzie, and what? Sing again?" Steve asked. Dustin laughed sarcastically.
He turned to me. "So, why'd you spend the night at his house?" He asked.
"None of your damn business, Henderson. Put your seatbelt on." He said. He looked in the rearview mirror. "Hey! Seatbelt!" He yelled at me. I put it on.
Once we reached Weather Top, Dustin got out. "Pick me up at 6." He said. He grabbed his duffel bag. "Don't get her pregnant!" He yelled as he walked up. I crawled up the front, laughing.
"Ignore him." Steve said. "Are you hungry?"
"Yeah, actually. Starving." I replied.
He took me to the diner. I ordered an easy meal, and ate it quickly. He watched me, eating his own meal.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing." He replied. He smiled as I finished. I reached down into the small purse I had left in his car and pulled out a twenty dollar bill. "Nope." He said.
"Yes." I said.
"Nope." He said again. He ended up paying. The month went by quickly. Soon enough, it was time to leave.
Everyone came over to help us finish loading everything. I walked into Joyce's room.
"Hey.. uhm, I found this letter." She said. "Hopper, a few months ago.. he uh, he was a little bit upset at how much time you and Steve were spending together. We made one for El, but he never gave them that speech."
I looked at her, confused. "He didn't give you your speech either?" She asked. I shook my head. "Well, here." She said.
I took the paper and read it to myself. "There's something I wanted to talk to you both about. I know this is a difficult situation, but I care about you both very much. And I know that you care about each other very much. And that's why it's important that we set these boundaries moving forward, so we can build an environment where we all
feel comfortable, trusted and open to sharing our
feelings.
Feelings. Jesus. The truth is, for so long I'd forgotten what those even were. I've been stuck in one place, in a cave, you might say. A deep. dark cave. And then you and El came into my life and for the first time in a long time, I started to feel things again. I started to feel happy. But, lately, I guess I've been feeling. distant from you two. Like you're pulling away from me or something. I miss playing board games every night. I miss eating together, making Triple Decker Eggo Extravaganza's with El. But I know you're getting older. Growing. Changing. And I guess, if I'm being really honest, that's what scares me. I don't want things to change. So, I think maybe that's why I came in here, to try to maybe... stop that change. To turn back the clock. To make things go back to how they were. But I know that's naive. It's just not how life works. It's moving. Always moving, whether you like it or not. And. yeah, sometimes it's painful. Sometimes it's sad. And sometimes it's surprising. Happy. So, you know what? Keep on growing up, kid. Don't let me stop you. Make mistakes, learn from them, and when life hurts you, because it will, remember the hurt. The hurt is good. It means you're out of that cave. But please, if you don't mind, for the sake of your poor old dad, keep the door open three inches."
I wiped the tears from my face. I laughed slightly. Joyce walked in. "Are you okay?" She asked. I nodded. I folded it up and put it in my pocket.
I grabbed the final box and walked out to the truck, then put it in. I walked to Steve and leaned on his car. I put my head on his shoulder as I looked at the place I had called home.
"You could always just.. live in my attic. I could hide you." He said. "No one has to know you're still here."
"I wish.." I said. "I wish I was normal. I wish I could stay here, with you."
"Then stay here." He said.
"I can't. You know I can't."
He stood up and grabbed my hand, pulling me onto his chest. "I'll miss you, Love." He said.
"I'll miss you too, Harrington." I said.
All the kids came over and gave me a hug. Max's hug was awkward. "I'm sorry." I told her. She looked at me, confused.
Nancy came over before I could explain. She hugged me. "Good luck." She said with a smile.
I hugged Steve again. "Don't get anymore head trauma." I said. "I'll call you daily, okay?"
He laughed. "Okay." He said.
"Don't forget to take care of yourself. Don't work too hard, especially when you get a headache." I said. He'd been having massive migraines since we were kidnapped with Russians.
"Alright." He said.
"Ok.." I said. "I think that's everything.."
"Okay." He said. I touched his face lightly. "I'll see you soon.."
"Yeah.. soon." I replied. Soon would never be soon enough. "Oh! Right, I have a gift for you."
I dug through my purse that was in the truck, and pulled out a little box. I handed it to him.
He opened it. It was a bottle of my perfume. He always said that when he couldn't sleep with me, he slept with the pillow I used because it smelled like me.
"Thank you." He said. He kissed me.
"Goodbye, Harrington." I said.
"Goodbye." He replied. I walked to the truck. Joyce and El had already gotten in. Will and Jonathan were going to drive the car. The other car was hooked up behind the truck.
I looked at the house, then at Steve. I waved once more, then got in.
I stared out the window, watching the town flash by. My home. My people. Steve. I was just leaving it all behind.
