I sat in the living room, watching Steve throw around his bat.
"Be careful with that thing, Harrington." I said. He chuckled
"Am I intimidating?" He asked. I nodded.
"Very." I said. He sat next to me.
"Is something wrong?" He asked.
"No.. nothing more than usual." I said. "I'm kind of tired.. but that's it."
"What about your arms? They good?"
"Yeah. Still painful, but I'll be okay." I replied. I looked at the ground. "I'm just.. I'm worried."
"About what?"
"Everything."
"I am too."
I rested my head on his shoulder. The lights started to flash. "They must have woken him up."
I said.
They stopped a few seconds later.
Hopper rushed in. We both stood up.
We discovered Will was trying to reach us. He was using morse code.
Hopper wrote all of the symbols Will tapped, then he brought it in to us.
The first letter was C. The next, L. O was next. Then S, then E. Close. The next one was G, then A, then T, and finally E. Gate.
"Close gate." We all said. The phone started to ring.
"Shit!" I yelled I threw it off of the wall.
"It was just a phone. He could be anywhere, right?" Steve asked.
I heard them. "Shit!" I yelled.
The others rushed in with Will.
Hopper walked in and handed Nancy a gun. We all stood, ready.
"Where are they?" Nancy asked. The noises came from our right. We all moved that way.
Then they came from the front of the house.
The screeching suddenly stopped, then a monster flew through the window. It was dead.
"Holy shit.." I said. The door unlocked. Everyone drew their weapons. The door opened.
The world went quiet. I heard nothing. I felt tears stinging my eyes. Not from pain, or sadness, but from joy, and relief. I ran toward her. I dropped to my knees and slid into her, encasing her in a hug.
"You're alive.." I said. I released her, then stood up. I checked her over. "Thank God.."
"Hi." She said. She looked back at Mike. He walked up and gave her a hug.
"I never gave up on you." Mike told her. "Ever. I called you every night. Every night."
"I know. I heard." She said.
I looked back at Steve, who was smiling at me. I walked toward him.
"I told you she was okay." He said. I hugged him.
"Maybe I should just start believing you." I said. Once we parted, he grabbed my head and wiped my face clear of tears.
"Why didn't you tell me you were there?" Mike asked.
"Because I wouldn't let her." Hopper said. I looked at him.
"What?" I asked.
"What is this? Where have you been?" He asked her.
"Where have you been?" She asked. They hugged.
"You.. you've been hiding her? You knew she was safe this entire damn time, and you didn't tell me?" I said, my voice getting louder. Mike pushed him.
Steve grabbed my arm. "Calm down." He said. I looked at him.
Hopper and Mike went into one of the rooms. I paced.
"Why the hell couldn't I find you?" I asked her.
"I.. I blocked you out." She said.
"How the hell did you block me out?"
"I don't know." She said. "I just.. did."
I sat down next to Steve. I leaned my head back, looking up at the ceiling. He put his hand on my leg. I hadn't realized it was shaking.
Joyce called me over to the kitchen table. I walked over. "Both of you have opened this gate before, right?" She asked. We both nodded. "So, if we can get you back there, do you think you can close it?"
"Yeah." I replied.
"Good." She said.
"It's not like it was before." Hopper said. "It's grown. And it's overrun with demogorgons."
"Demodogs." Dustin said.
"I'm sorry, what?" Hopper asked.
"Half dog, half demogoron. Demodog."
"How is this important?"
"It's not.. I'm sorry."
"We can do it." I said.
"No, you're not hearing me." He said.
"We're hearing you." El said. "We can do it."
"Even if they can, there's still another problem. If the brain dies, the body dies." Mike said.
"I thought that was the whole point." Max said.
"It is, but if we're really right about this.." Mike said. "I mean, if they close the gate and kill him and his army.."
"Will's part of that army." Lucas said.
"Closing the gate would kill him." I said. They walked to Will.
I sat down, preparing myself. I watched Hopper carry Will out, and followed. I stood outside. The cool air felt good.
Steve walked over to me from the back. He handed Jonathan something, then grabbed my head.
"Be careful." He said. "Don't do anything too stupid."
"I won't." I said. He hugged me.
"Please.. be safe." He whispered to me.
"Steve.. if I don't make it.. I just want you to know, I remember." I said. He looked slightly embarrassed. "Steve.. I think I love you too." I whispered.
"You two, come on." Hopper said. I looked into Steve's eyes.
I waved and walked to Jim's truck. I got in with El. I looked back, and watched Steve wave.
We drove for the lab. I shut everything out when El and Hopper had a conversation. I did hear something about her seeing her mother.
It made me think about mine. I knew my mother. Dr. Brenner wasn't able to get his hands on me until I was 5. I remember bits about her.
Her soft hair, the way she smiled. How brave she was.
I didn't remember anything else, though. I wish I did.
In little to no time, we had reached the lab. We got out. There was screeching.
It didn't bother me as much as it used to. Hopper grabbed his gun.
We walked into the building I once called home. Images of Papa flashed through my mind. The trauma he had caused me. Us.
I didn't even realize it. Not until it was too late. We walked through the lab.
Hopper heard a noise. He told us to wait, to which I did not obey. It was a man I had met once. Eleven followed.
"Oh yeah, this is Eleven and uh.. what was your number?" Hopper asked.
"One." I replied.
"Eleven's been staying with me for about a year. One, well, she lives with Will's mom. And they're about to save our asses. Maybe when this is all said and done, maybe you could help them out, you know?" Hopper asked. "Help them lead, like, a normal life. One where they aren't poked and prodded and treated like lab rats, you know? Think about it." He said. He tightened his belt around his leg. "Don't go anywhere."
Owens nodded.
We walked down the stairs. Once we reached the bottom, it was a long hallway. I knew this place. We were getting close.
We heard a demogorgon. "Stay here." Jim instructed. We did. I heard shrieking. They were being hurt.
I ran in. There was nothing there. Hopper looked confused.
Jonathan called. They got it out of him. We made our way to the lift. The gate was huge.
Eleven grabbed my hand. I squeezed it in response. She let go when it was time. We both raisef our hands. I focused. The vines started to close in as the gate closed.
"Focus on a memory that makes you angry." A mans voice rang through my head. I thought of Brenner stealing me from my mother. Her screams.
"Focus on you. Focus on your power, your energy." Brenner's voice rang out.
I saw a figure.
The gate started to close quicker as I continued to channel my anger into my power.
I heard screeching again. They were coming back. The gate continued to get smaller. I heard gunshots.
The lift shook.
We continued to close it. "You have a wound, One. A bad wound. It's growing, spreading. And eventually it will kill you." Brenner said.
I screamed, shoving him out. I raised my other hand as the smoke came in. I fought it off and continued to close the gate. My body floated.
I fell as the gate closed. I laid on the ground for a short while. "You did good, kids. So good." Hopper said. Hop helped us out of the lab.
We made our way back to the Byer's house. Hopper helped El and I out of the truck.
Another car pulled in. It was Billy, although Billy wasn't driving. It was Steve.
They all came out. Steve ran over to me.
I touched his face. "You look like shit." I said in a groggy voice.
He laughed. "You look tired. Come on." He said. My brain was shutting off quickly. He helped me in the house.
"Holy shit." I said, looking at the ground. "Why the hell is Billy on my living room floor..?"
"Long story, not enough time." He said. "You have to sleep."
He helped me into my room and sat me on my bed. He covered me with a blanket, then started to walk out.
"Wait!" I said. "Stay with me."
"I'll be right back." He responded. "I promise."
He was. He came back with more bandages and more alcohol.
He took my jacket off and let me lay down again.
He removed my bandages that were covered in blood. He took a washcloth and cleaned my wounds. I winced.
"Sorry." He said.
He rewrapped them, then took the washcloth and cleaned under my nose. When he was done, he set the stuff on the floor then took my shoes off.
He took his off then laid next to me.
"Is this okay?" He asked. I grabbed his hand and wrapped it around me in response.
I fell asleep not long after.
The next morning, I woke up to the smell of pancakes. I turned to look at Steve, but he was gone. I stood up and walked out of the room. My arms felt like they were on fire for some reason.
I walked out and saw Jonathan, Steve, Will, Eleven, Hopper, and Joyce all sitting at the table. They smiled at me as I walked in.
"Hey, Y/N. I made pancakes." Joyce said. "Come on. Let's eat."
I sat down and ate my food. Once I was finished, Steve gave me a look that said 'we need to talk.' I excused myself and walked outside. He followed.
"So, what's this about?" I asked.
I turned to face him. He had a grin on his face.
"What are you smiling about?" I asked.
"I love you, Y/N." He said. I stood there for a second.
"Wait, what?" I asked. "You do?" He nodded.
He gave me a hug, and lifted me off the ground. "I love you." He repeated. "I love you, I love you."
I laughed. He put me down. "May I?" He asked. I smiled and nodded. He kissed me.
I set my hands on the back of his head. He grabbed my face with one hand, his other rested on my shoulder.
We separated. He watched my eyes. All of a sudden, the pain came back into my mind.
"Shit." I said, grabbing one of my arms. Steve quickly unwrapped the bandages.
"They don't look infected." He told me. "They must just be started to heal. We should get you into the hospital so they can stitch you up.
I shook my head. "I can do that myself." I said. I walked inside and with some assistance, stitched my injuries up. Steve cleaned them again, then wrapped them.
"What?" I asked him. He was smiling.
"Nothing." He responded. He continued to smile as he wrapped.
"You're smiling."
"Can't I smile?"
"No." I responded, laughing.
He finished wrapping. "You do some stupid things, Y/N." He said.
"Like saving your ass?" I asked. He laughed, and nodded.
Steve stood up. "I should get going." He said. I nodded. "I'll be back, though. Don't worry."
"Who said I was worried?" I asked.
"I did." He responded. He walked towards me and squatted down in front of me. "Get some more sleep." He told me. "I'll see you later."
He kissed me again. I smiled. "So is this a thing now?" I asked.
"What? Us kissing?" He asked.
"Yeah." I responded.
"Depends. Do you want it to be more?"
"Let me sleep on that." I said. "That's quite the commitment, Harrington."
He laughed. "Goodbye, Y/N."
"Bye."
The next month, Hopper came over. "Good news, kid." He said.
"What?" I asked.
He whipped out papers. "New birth certificate, new name. You are now, Y/N Hopper." He said. I smiled. "And El is Jane Hopper."
I hugged him. "So, am I calling you Dad now?" I asked. He laughed.
"If you want to." He replied. Joyce came over and hugged me.
"I'll always be here for you, okay?" she asked. I nodded.
"Thank you." I said.
"Now.. I do have some bad news." He said.
"What?" I asked.
"Please don't hate me." He said. "Owens says it'd be better if we lay low for a year. No school, no really public places."
"Oh." I said. "I can live with that. That's okay."
"El has permission to go to the SnowBall, so you know.. if you want to go, you can." He said. "Watch over her, maybe."
"That sounds great." I said.

The night of the SnowBall, Nancy picked me up from Hopper's cabin.
El stayed to finish getting ready. We drove to the school to help set up.
After we were done, it was almost time for the kids to start showing up.
I sat further back, for Hopper's expense. He told me to lay low, just in case.
I watched as Dustin walked in. That meant Steve was outside. I walked out.
He waved as I walked up to his car. "Hey." I said.
"So, you are coming over tonight, right?" He asked. I nodded.
"I'll be there." I said.
"Good."
"I'll see you there." I said. I leaned in the car and kissed him before walking back in.
I stayed toward where the other kids were sitting.
I watched as Max and Lucas went dancing. Some girl asked Will, to which he agreed. Dustin walked up to a girl. I watched as he was rejected. He looked so sad. He stood there for a second, then walked over to the bleachers.
I sat next to him when he sat on the bleachers.
"Hey, kid." I said. He sniffled.
"Hi." He said.
"You know, any girl would be lucky to dance with you. Those girls are just dumbasses." I said.
Nancy approached us. "Wanna dance?" She asked him. "Come on, let's go." She dragged him out.
I watched them dance. I smiled. El walked in shortly after. She and Mike danced.
She looked beautiful. I watched for a while, then decided to take off.
I walked to Steve's. The cool air felt nice.
Once I got there, I threw a rock at his window. He opened it, and I climbed up.
"Hey." I said, climbing in.
"Hey." He said. He helped me take my coat off. He looked at my healing wounds. "Those look better." He said.
"Yeah." I replied. I sat on his bed. He walked over to his closet and grabbed a box that was wrapped. "Already?" I asked. He nodded. "Theres still 10 days till Christmas."
"Yeah, well I want to see your face now." He said. He handed me the box. It was light, and smaller. I opened it carefully. He took the wrapping paper from me and threw it away.
I opened the box. Inside was a beautiful locket. I took it out and opened it. There was a picture of us.
"Steve.." I said. "It's beautiful." He got on the bed and sat behind me, moved my hair to one side, then took the necklace from my hands.
He kissed my neck softly before placing my hair back where it was. I turned to face him.
"It looks good on you." He said. "Really good." I grabbed his face and kissed him.
"Thank you." I said. He smiled. Steve gave me comfort. Even when I was scared, he helped me.
He grabbed the side of my head as I started to lay down. He followed me. Once we reached the bed, he kissed me. I grabbed his face with one hand as his other found my waist.
"You're beautiful." He said. I smiled.
I slept peacefully that night. I liked hearing his breathing in the crick of my neck. Every odd sound his body made.
His smell filled my nostrils, providing peace. His arms tightly wrapped around my body. Him.
I woke up in the dark. Steve was still asleep, holding me. I looked at the clock.
"Shit!" I whisper screamed. It read 3:23
Steve groaned slightly as I stood up. "What? What's the matter?" He asked with a tired voice.
"I have to get home." I responded. "It's 3 in the morning."
He sat up, rubbing his eye. "Can't you just.. call Hop?" He asked.
"Maybe.. yeah.. I can do that." I said. I walked to the phone Steve had in his room and dialed Hopper's number.
It rang a few times, then he picked up. "What?" He asked.
      "Hi.." I said.
"What the hell? I gave you a reasonable curfew and you do this?" He asked.
"I know, I'm sorry." I said. "I just fell asleep at Steve's. It won't happen again, I promise."
He sighed. "Alright, just.. be home in the morning." He said.
"Thank you." I responded. I hung up the phone. "We'll see how much trouble I'm in tomorrow."
Steve smiled. I walked back over to his bed and crawled in. He covered me up with his blankets, then went back to his position.
      And everything was okay again.
