October 2057
"I know it's a brand new day and already on a new task, but what caused your later than usual attendance yesterday, Genji?" The Shimada's family trainer, Yamagami Asa, interrogates the young disciple in English. He is taken aback and his pupils enlarge, avoiding eye contact after he unintentionally exposes his shockness. He continued to practice his grip with a karambit as he grew tired of the same old boring kunais. Fiddling his fingers, he found a comfort grip with his right hand.
"I take it that it is confidential?" The elder woman applies pressure with her pushiness in the subject. Genji slings his karambit into the practice target at the very edges which is considered no good. He grumbles in annoyance and curses in his native tongue.
"Nothing you cannot tell us, Sparrow," A foreign voice brings attention to the all too known older brother of Genji, Shimada Hanzo. He sends his warm smile and gives a brief bow in greeting. He swiftly grabs a katana, gives a few practice swings, and continues his train of thought, "You know, brother, it's not good to live out a lie."
"I am in no way lying, I simply do not have a way to reply to Sensei Yamagami's question yet," Genji replies rather rapidly with flustered cheeks.
"What could possibly be more important than training?" Hanzo inquires rather diligently with his head smoothly adjusting his gaze and undivided attention to Genji and, with malice, fiddling with the blade at the end of his katana.
Genji, still facing the practice target and a fresh karambit in hand, hints displeasure as he slightly tilts his head back at his rather dispassionate elder brother, "Like having some sort of normalcy in my life."
"There is no normal life as we are clearly crim–"
"Do not say these things in front of your Sensei!" Yamagami shrieks loudly as she has her hands on her hips. Her eyes were blazing, and the two brothers had closed mouths. They glance at each other then back to their Sensei, "I do not want to hear another peep out of you two since I cannot trust you will be civil." Genji's phone, thankfully didn't buzz in the middle of the Sensei's lecture, did buzz, and Henzo raises a brow at the sight of him hastily grabbing his phone.
Yamagami glares at the younger Shimada and extends her arm for her palm to be laid out as she rears close to Genji. He swiftly taps his thumbs on the screen as if he is replying to a message and shuts off the device, and Hanzo rolls his eyes suspiciously. Genji waives his phone over with no reluctance. "You are no better than Kiriko."
"Don't compare me to a rascal," Genji whines playfully with a hand on his heart and exasperating giggles escaping his pink lips. He grins at the thought of the younger girl who he calls a little sister he never had. The two have a close relationship and he frowns as he comes to a realization, "Speaking of Kiriko, where has she been?"
"She is attempting to rebel against me since I am apparently disrespecting her beliefs," Yamagami explains as she assists with the targets in front of the young men by removing the unscathed karambits. "Though, I find it utterly ridiculous how she tries so hard to please her grandmother by learning that dullard astrology and kitsune sorcery," She continues with a scoff and chagrin laced in her words. Genji raises a brow and strikes a target rather teasingly close to his Sensei who is taken aback and glares at the boy.
"Aren't you though?" Genji devilishly opposed his Sensei with a smirk. She tilts her head with a frown and confusion.
"What?"
"You just said what she is learning isn't fitting your standards," Genji contested with his point as he maneuvers over to the table under the nearby tent with other knives and weapons. He beams at the first sight of a set of shuriken. He promptly puts them to use.
