Why wouldn't the water let him control it! Percy concentrated on the water that filled Annabeth's lungs and tried to expel it, but it wouldn't obey. Finally as a last resort Percy started CPR and tried to push the water out, it wouldn't budge. Percy concentrated on Poseidon and suddenly he appeared right next to him, "Percy, what happened?" Poseidon asked, his deep voice full of concern. Percy tried to talk but nothing came out. Poseidon knelt down and examined Annabeth's pale face, "Percy, this water is cursed. I've seen it once before, it won't go away until it's had a sacrifice." Poseidon looked at Percy, "You or her." Percy took a deep breath, "I swear I will not let her die." Poseidon gave Percy a look of anguish and closed his eyes, starting to push the water from Annabeth's lungs. Slowly Percy began to choke and as Annabeth woke, Percy breathed his last. Annabeth sat up and saw Percy's lifeless form, crying out she rushed to his side and tried to see if he was still bleeding. Poseidon let out a sob, "Don't Annabeth, he's dead." He buried his head in his hands, "An oath to keep with final breath." And Annabeth realized that Percy had sacrificed himself for her. The words she had heard in the strange dream she had had while she was asleep were what he had said, 'I swear I will not let her die', that was his oath to keep with final breath. Annabeth leaned down near Percy's ear, whispering softly, "I love you." And she could have sworn that the moment those words left her lips, she could hear Percy chuckling and saying I love you too.
