You know that moment when your fingers get chapped during the summer, and you lose your grip in one hand? Boy... You'd think one hand is enough. And guess what? I PERMANANTLY lost my grip on BOTH hands during the day my parents painfully died. As you can tell this was a "GREAT" day. Just great.

I stared in horror when I saw my house being engulfed in huge flames. Nearly half of it had already been burnt to the ground. The neighbors had gathered around with buckets of water, trying to snuff out the fires. Quickly I ran towards the door and took a deep breath before entering through what literally would look like hell. Right then the smoke stung my eyes and made them water. After a few moments, I was coughing like a maniac. For a second, I thought I would give up and die...

After regaining my courage, I headed towards the kitchen and hesitantly reached for the golden doornob. The heat stung my right hand and burnt it. I let out a startled scream, but then I heard my mother coughing. I used my other hand to open the door. I could feel the smoke filling my lungs and once again I coughed. There I saw my mom coughing on the floor. After about 4 individual coughs, she fell face first on the ground. I ran towards her and shook her crazily.

"Mom mom wake up please please mom!" I yelled in a quivering voice. She was unresponsive. I screamed and cried over her body. My red hoodie was burning and I could hear it sizzling. It stung at my sides... I tried to put it out with my hands, but it only made my hands burn. Once I finished frantically searching for something t put out the fire, something caught my eye. A glass of water from earlier. I used the cup of water by the stove to put it out completely. As I searched through the burning house to find my dad, the heat burnt my hands... From there, a firefighter pulled me out and layed me down on a stretcher. I fought to get up, but it was no use. My muscles failed me and I was carried into an ambulance.

I woke up to an oxygen mask over my mouth and Ben hovering over me. It was great to see his smile again... My sister was right next to him holding her burnt teddy bear. She and Ben were about to cry, considering I could see their eyes watering.

"Charlotte... It's OK sweetie... Come here." I reached for my sister and she came toward me.

"I'm gonna be alright... OK?" She nodded and hugged me. Her strawberry blonde hair fell around her face as I started to weakly sing her favorite nursery rhyme.

Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques,
Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous?
Sonnez les matines! Sonnez les matines!
Ding, dang, dong. Ding, dang, dong.

By this time, Charlotte was crying pools of tears. I didn't expect to see a 14 year old Ben cry at all.

"Alice I want you to be ok..." She said using her small hands to whipe away her tears.

I patted her back and embraced her.

"Shh... shh... I'm ok..." I thought of a way to make her smile. Idea!

"Do you wanna play cards?" I asked her. I knew she was smiling.

I tried to pick up my deck of cards, but they simply slipped from my hands. I tried again. Still no luck.

Ben smiled weakly and picked up the deck for me. His blue eyes stared at me, then Charlotte, then back at the cards. He pushed his blonde hair back in place then opened the deck up.

"You must really love playing cards..." Ben said as he tried to keep things happy.

"Especially because you were just in a fire, presently in critical condition, and having a slim possibility of... passing... You still wanna play cards."

I smiled at him and looked at Charlotte. She had her teddy bear in her hands and hugged him.

A few days after the fire, I was still unable to grab anything.

"Hey... I brought you a present..." said Ben as he pulled out a white box with a green ribbon tied around it.

"Thanks," I replied. Ben smiled down at me and laid the present on my lap. I reached toward the ribbon and pulled on the bow. I tried to untie it, but stupid burns...

Ben untied the box and opened it. Inside was a pair of black leather gloves. At first, I was confused. Then I realized why he had given them to me. Now I could grab anything I needed to. Ben helped me put my gloves on, and once he did I tried to grab my card deck. It worked!

"Ben thank you!" I yelled as I hugged him. I cried in his shoulder. I trusted him. I trusted him with my life.

A/N: Ben, thank you for giving me the first and last pair of gloves I'll ever use. I promise.
