From down the hallway Toby watches Walter lean against Paige's bedroom then he hears the soft click of a lock being undone. Then he slightly smiles when Walter slowly creeps into her room. He shuts the door quietly behind him. Then Toby walks over to Happy who is looking very anxious on the couch.
"What has you on edge?" He asks standing in front of her.
"Nothing. I'm fine. She says not looking at him, just staring at the wall.
"As a students of human behavior all I have to say to that statement is... Liar-Liar-Pants-On-Fire." He says as he sits down on the couch next to her.
"Are you aware that you are the biggest jackass I know." She replies bluntly, continuing to stare at the wall.
" I know. And I take pride in that." She finally looks at him and he flashes her a cocky grin. She just looks down.
"Seriously Happy, what's wrong?"
*Silence*
"You're acting all anxious.""I don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh really.." He asks raising his eyebrows, "Exhibit A." He says as he gestures toward Happy's knee which is bobbing up and down rapidly. "For some the bobbing of the knee is a subconscious tick that they do without realizing it. These are the people who have trouble sitting still, usually they have ADHD. Where as for most bobbing your knee it a sign that one it anxious and not sure how to express their feelings otherwise." As he explains this Happy looks down at her leg, slows the pace of her knee and looks up at Toby.
"So I'm going to ask again," Toby starts while staring right into Happy's beautiful brown eyes, "What's wrong Happy?"
"I'm hurting for Ralph." she replies holding his glaze then looking down at her feet.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean my dad dropped me off at a hospital and left. He never came back. He never saved me from the loneliness and pain of foster care. And that hurt." Happy continues to look at her feet and Toby's heart feels heavy. He wants to fix Happy and her past so badly. But how can he erase so much pain from ones life? He's only one person, but he cares so incredibly much.
"I'm so sorry Happy."
She snorted. "It's not your fault." Toby knew she was trying to lighten the mood but his chest still felt tight.
"Anyway when my dad left I felt like nothing," Toby's heart snapped in two. "It hurt knowing that he didn't care enough to keep me. So that's why I'm hurting for Ralph. When I was separated from the person who was supposed to love me I was in so much pain, but I knew that he didn't care so I wouldn't let myself miss him. But in Ralph's case Paige loves him more than words can describe and he was separated from her anyway."
Toby just sat beside her and listened, just listened. Because that's what she really needed and had never had before. Someone who would listen.
"You're awfully quiet Doc, I mean I'm not complaining the silence is nice, it's just strange." She finally looks at him again.
"Do you still feel like that?" He asks abruptly.
"Feel like what?" She asks holding his gaze in confusion.
"Like you're worth nothing." All Toby can do is stare at her, he wants her to see she is worth so much.
"No I guess not." She says staring right back at him. "This team is helping me heal, your helping me heal."
"Good because your not. Not worthless you are worth so much and even if you don't see it yet, I do. And trust me it's beautiful." Happy smiles softly and Toby grinned right back. Then Toby grabbed Happy's soft little hands and laces them through his as Happy rested her head on his shoulder. "Trust me, you're beautiful."
