Within the fold, the Conductor was starting to panic, flipping various levers to speed the train up. The sounds of the volcra only made him more frantic. Although the Crows didn't outwardly show their fear, they still wanted to make it out of the Fold with their life.
"How do you fight them off?" Kaz looked at the conductor in pure irritation.
" I outrun them. Open the throttle and toss in all the coal which works when there's 20 pounds of it." The conductor bit back while simultaneously throwing shade at Jesper. The sounds of the creature's claws filled the train before a sudden thud hit the corner of the front train. The four flinched at the sight of blood dripping from an open area in the roof. The goat squealed as it ran across the floorboards of the cabin. "Damn it! The stupid thing impaled itself on a spike."
"Well we have to get it off. the others will stand on it."
"More coal!"
"We're down to fumes!" Kaz couldn't help but throw the bag into the fire as if it would make anything better. " We won't make it with this extra weight."
"Give me a second."
Jesper was in the back of the cabin trying to prevent himself from having a panic attack, "This is how we die?"
"Jesper, grab the goat."
"I'm not throwing out the goat!" Inej began to pray to the Saints for forgiveness and safety in fear that she might not make it out the fold. Kaz was very close to throwing both of them out the door.
"Grab the damn goat! It's not bait. It's for you!" Despite his overwhelming fear, Jesper was still able to grab the animal and bring it to his chest. "I need you to calm down. Hug the goat. Shut the hell up!"
He would have laughed if it weren't for the deathly situation they were currently in. A metal clang sounded as they rocked. The older man looked up in alarm. This was bad.
"We should have hit that 20 seconds ago."
"20 seconds is?" Honestly, Kaz wouldn't be any more surprised if anything else went wrong. No heartrender, no more coal, multiple near death experiences within the last couple of days.
"My timings are precise to get us outside. Even 20 seconds behind means the train stops inside the Fold and that...that means we die."
~
The next few nights did nothing to comfort the boy as it riddled him in nightmares. His memories. Some came as long night terrors, others like tonight were blessingly short.
He was surrounded by guards, knocked down and was getting beat to the brink of death. As he takes his last breath, something erupts from his limp body. An explosion of light and fire burned through everything within miles of its center. The explosion expands until it slows before rapidly returning to Sidra. Sidra's body glowed slightly as golden veins frame his body. His body continued to grow brighter until the energy needed a release once more.
As the boy's once limp body takes a single inhale, the energy is released violently into the sky. The night's sky was soon brightening with colors of green and gold.
Soldiers from the Second army paused in their stride, they had been riding in the direction of the first explosion when the second was released. They looked towards their General for direction, in what looked like anticipation and awe. The General nodded his head with a slight smile. They had finally found Sankt Novus.
When they reach the burned sight, they heard yells and quickly realized that they weren't the only ones to see the light. In the middle was Sidra and Fredja soldiers fighting.
The others could see the fight escalating very quickly and went to help the grisha in need. Sidra was fighting on autopilot, eyes glowing a bright gold and green energy flowing from his hands. Catching his breath, Sidra didn't notice the Fredja behind him. Before the man could touch the young boy, the General used the Cut to save him. He continued to use the cut to kill a few others.
At the sound of something flying by, Sidra flinched and whirred around to see the Fredja's body split in two. His head shot up in bewilderment before spotting the man dressed in black and stepping back in fear. He felt his body freeze up as he watched the man's motions. How his arms raised, his foot placements, the black shadows coming from him.
It took a moment before the General realized the boy was watching him. Not wanting to scare the boy, whose eyes still glowed gold, he raised his hands slowly to show he was no threat. He introduced himself and the other grisha present to the boy.
Kirigan noticed the glow in his eyes dulling before his eyes darted to something behind him. The glow back and brighter than before, Sidra swung his arm a way that was familiar to the Grisha. Familiar to Kirigan.
A green slice past Kirigan's head at startling speed. The grisha only unfrozen when a small thud was heard only to be followed by a larger thud. There laid a Fredja with his head missing. His head had rolled towards Kirigan's feet.
Kirigan made eye contact with the boy, nodding in appreciation, the boy nodded as well. Sidra tried to take a step forward, only for his vision to grow blurry. Kirigan could see him stumble and caught him before he could drop. Sidra tried his best to focus on the man's voice that was reassuring that he was safe, but soon blacked out.
"I got you, little star. I got you."
