[ Re-posting this here because I wan't to use that book for something else. :) And no, this is not stolen, I wrote this. ]
Thunder rumbled loudly, overpowering the sound of the pouring rain. It was dark, and nobody in their right mind would ever think of stepping outside in this weather, but this time, that wasn't the case.
A erupting scream sounded over all the noise. The scream was filled with anger and pain. Shadow fell to his knees, slamming his fist on the wet grass. He repeated the same motion multiple times before stopping.
Dammit. His fist shook slightly. I try to forget. But you keep returning, Maria.
Tears filled up his eyes and he shook violently, letting out pained sobs which he had held in for so long. Suddenly, he felt the rain was no longer pouring on him. He turned his head to Amy holding an umbrella over his head, her soft quills dampening, since the umbrella could only cover one.
"What do you want, Amy?" Shadow said in a menacing tone. Amy wasn't phased.
"I just want to know whats wrong." She said, her soft eyes looked at him sympathetically. She could see how his eyes were sore. He had been crying for a while now.
"There's nothing wrong. Nothing that concerns you." Shadow said standing up, his back facing toward her. Amy sighed in frustration. He was horrible at hiding his feelings. She took a few steps until she was standing next to him. They both looked forward, saying nothing, and the silence was itching to be broken.
"The rain definitely helps hide the tears. I should know." Amy said, holding the umbrella over both of their heads. Shadow said nothing. It seemed he was pondering his thoughts. The silence was loud, even with all the rain. Shadow finally opened his mouth to speak.
"Then why do you always pretend you're fine then?" He said looking at her. His eyes pierced her soul, looking right through her. "You bottle your emotions a lot. It's easy to tell." Amy was lost for words. "It's not healthy." Shadow finished, turning back. Amy continued to look at him.
"I think you should take your own advice." She said softly. Shadow didn't argue. He just stood, looking out into the distance. He raised his hand to his face, and clenched it into a tight fist. He looked at his own life. It was so drained of happiness. If only there was something that could fill that void.
"I try to do what I can on this earth, but at times," His fist started to shake. "I can't save everyone." He paused. Amy looked at him with sorrowful eyes. "I'm not as 'ultimate' as people perceive. I can't solve all the worlds problems." He looked down, almost embarrassed of his weakness. Amy put a hand on his shoulder.
"You're right. You can't, it's just the harsh reality." Amy said, looking at Shadow even though he was looking down, she knew he was listening. "We've been battling villains for years, but even so, we couldn't save everyone either." There was a pause.
"Are you finished yet?" Shadow mumbled, meeting her gaze. Amy shook her head.
"I may not understand exactly what you're going through, Shadow, but.. I'm here for you." Amy said, outstretching her hand, she had a sympathetic smile. Instead of taking her hand, Shadow brushed it away, walking farther from her.
"Thanks, but I don't need your pity." He said, closing his eyes while he walked.
"I'm not pitying you Shadow!" Amy yelled. "I just want you to know you're not alone!" She said, walking up closer to him. "That you have somebody to talk to, somebody to come to."
Shadow seemed to pull a chaos emerald from thin air. He held it in front of him and warped away, leaving Amy alone in the rain. Her outstretched hand fell hopelessly. She stood alone, dropping her umbrella, letting the rain engulf her.
. . .
Shadow warped into a new area. His place. No matter how much he tried to brush them away, he could still hear her words.
I just want you to know that you're not alone! That you have somebody to come to in a time of need.
He leaned against a wall and put his face in his hands. He couldn't help but feel bad that he had just left her there, but, what was he supposed to do?
. . . [ time skip, one week later ] . . .
Shadow stood in the same stop he had left Amy before. It was pouring again, as if time hadn't even passed since he was here last. He closed his eyes and let the rain poor down his face, but something caught his attention. He looked to his right to see a pink umbrella, the same one Amy held the week before. She was here.
"Amy?" Shadow called out. "Amy! Where are you!" He frantically turned to scan the field, but he couldn't spot her.
A silhouette caught his eye. It was her. Without thinking, Shadow dashed down the hill in her direction.
Amy had been lightly sobbing, for all she knew, nobody cared. She wanted to live, not just exist. Suddenly, she couldn't feel the rain anymore. She looked over her shoulder to see Shadow holding the same umbrella she had last week.
"The rain sure helps hide the tears, hm?" He said, sitting down beside her.
"Oh, Shadow. What are you doing here?" She said wiping her eyes quickly, trying to hide.
"I was looking for you." He said. He looked at her, but she didn't make eye contact. "You've been crying, haven't you?"
"Who me? Oh no! I just- really like the rain." She said trying her best to cover it up. "Nobody appreciates the rain! But I do!" She said with a forced smile. Shadow wasn't buying it. He reached his hand toward her face and wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Don't lie," He said, bringing his hand back to him. "you're a terrible liar." Shadow stood up extending his hand. Amy took it, and stood up aswell.
"Heh.. that obvious, huh?" Amy said sheepishly. Shadow just nodded slightly. He looked to the distance, and up at the moon.
"You know, I've been thinking about what you said," Amy turned to look at him. "and you're right. I can't do everything. I can't save everybody. I need to accept things as they come. I need time to adjust."
Amy smiled warmly, she was so happy that he was able to see things in a different light, and that she actually meant something to him.
"So I want to say, thank you." Shadow said, finishing off his thought. Amy smiled, and begun to laugh. She was so happy for him. That he was finally able to find peace.
"I'm glad you feel like it's not a burden on you anymore. You don't deserve to feel hurt. Nobody does." She looked at him and gave him a warm smile. Shadow could feel heat rising in his face lightly, and his heart pounded quickly. Hopefully the rain covered his face up.
"Thank you, Amy." He said. "You're the only thing other than Maria that's every made me happy." Amy looked up at him with a shocked expression. The corner of Shadows mouth rose ever so slightly.
So there they were, looking over the hilltop. Both felt weight being lifted off their shoulders. They both laughed.
Under the umbrella.
