I came to consciousness with a searing pain in my forehead. Milo was pressed hard to my chest, my arms tightly wrapped around his head. I fought the tremors that hit me hard as my body recovered from the physical trauma it had just received. But the minute my brain caught up with my body everything in me harshly stilled. It felt as if the cells in body screamed in fear. I pulled Milo from my body, trying to see his face through the thick smoke that filled the car. He was completely fine, his eyes wide and fearful as they stared back at me.
"It's okay buddy. I just need to get you out and then I'll get-" My words trailed off as tears ran harshly down my cheeks.
I was scared to see what state Blue was in. If he was alive even. The front left side of the car was the most damaged in the wreck, the driver's seat was targeted. This was only my fault. It should've been me instead.
I hurriedly opened the crushed door and laid Milo onto the concrete. The only thing I could see through the driver's seat window was Blue's head laid against the headrest. Blood was caked across his face and in his hair. How long had I been unconscious? What if-
I tried to pry the door open but it wouldn't budge. I felt my heart beating painfully in my chest as I tried over and over again, my fingers beginning to bleed as they cut themselves on the destroyed metal. This wasn't working.
Milo cried loudly as he laid his eyes on Blue in the driver's seat. He was now clutching my leg and standing on his tippie toes to see in the car. I sat him back down and laid a kiss on his cheek. I needed to get this fucking door open and every second felt like an hour. I moved to the side of the road where large rocks laid idle. This was my only option.
I moved back to the door and started roughly hacking at it. The glass took only seconds to begin cracking as I exerted the only strength I had left in my body. When the glass finally cracked into turquoise cubes I grabbed Blue's shoulders and pulled his limp body carefully out of the seat. I laid him on the concrete trying not to focus too much on the deathly look of his appearance. If he died I wouldn't know how to go on.
"Blue! Papa!" Milo shrieked in a pained rasp as he laid his body over Blue's, his small body shaking.
My mouth dropped open as words flew out of Milo's mouth for the first time. I was completely shocked before my brain reminded me of what I needed to do next. My hands shook has they ran along Blue's neck. Searching for a pulse, for anything.
"Grazie Gesù per il tuo perdono." (Thank you Jesus for your forgiveness.") I muttered the prayer of thanks as I felt a faint pulse.
I lifted Blue into my arms, his body laying completely limp.
"Papa's gonna be okay. We just have to walk a little. We've gotta be brave, alright?" I nodded to Milo to reassure him. But in all honestly I was most likely trying to reassure myself.
Milo nodded and grabbed onto my pant leg. We were gonna get home, alive, by any means necessary. I started to walk down the road, the jet was only about five minutes away by foot. I doubted we would get attacked, they probably assumed I was dead. And hell I don't know how we weren't. I never really believed in God, but in this moment I felt as if he had to exist. I had never been a good man but for some reason God had saved the love of my life. His life may be weening, but he's alive. And I plan to keep it that way.

When we made it to the jet I let out a loud sigh as it's lights shined through the darkened night. My two security guards were stationed outside of the plane, I should've had them with us every minute of the trip. But no one had every been killed in Italy, never. It had to be a family member, someone from inside. They squinted their eyes at us as we approached, their expressions quickly turning. They looked horrified as they looked at the lifeless body in my arms.
"Tell the Pilot to get us to a doctor. I don't care what country it's in." I fought the wave of dizziness that came over me as I climbed the stairs to the jet.
