"Apple sauce or oatmeal? If you don't speak up I'll have to choose for you." I mumbled, fighting the smile that was making its way onto my lips.

Santiago stared at me with pure hatred in his eyes, as if he could stare a hole right through my head. He was sitting up from the bed, his glasses pushed to the end of his nose. He had a light bandage wrapped around his neck.

"Okay, okay I'll stop. I know you want both." I stood up from my chair the smile finally breaking onto my face. I leaned down to kiss his lips, he brought his hand to the back of my head to kiss me back. This has become one of our main forms of communication. Climbing into the bed I sat right beside him.

I felt much happier these days, lighter. The season of spring was quickly passing and though slowly, things had changed. Santiago's surgery was successful and though he couldn't speak he would be able to once his throat healed. But mostly he had to heal from the amount of blood he had lost and finally he was feeling better. We spent many days in the hospital communicating through random hand signs and pen on paper. Milo spent most days with Armando and Mariana who seemed to be quite okay with taking care of him together. Luciano and Qiang's baby was safe. And Damiano had been found and killed by Armando himself.

            Everything was okay.

We were set to leave the hospital tomorrow and Santiago seemed relieved to finally leave. I was too, I just wanted to be back together again as a family. But I knew, the house would be very silent. At this point though I had found some humor in it.

"I love you." I spoke into the silent room, catching Santiago's eyes.

He smiled brightly before mouthing the words back, bringing me closer.

When we got home Armando, Mariana, Milo, and Vito were already waiting for us. Milo sprinted at full speed at Santiago, Santiago proceeding to pick him up and kiss his cheeks. A warmth spread across my chest as I watched the two. Mariana smiled bigger than I'd ever seen as he made his way over to her, she laid a kiss on his forehead. She was holding a cake with the letters welcome back crammed onto the top. Armando patted his shoulder and gently pulled him and Milo into a hug.

But the most excited person was Vito. He sniffed Santiago first before breaking out into a fit of energy. He was bowing and jumping up, his tail wagging so hard it was shaking his body. The dog had been sad due to Santiago's absence. Santiago used his free hand to pet the dog on his head, getting licked in the process.

We sat on the coach together, Milo clung closely to Santiago's side. Mariana and Armando left the room to cut the cake and bring slices for everyone. Milo silently stared Santiago in his eyes before hugging him tightly.

Milo's quiet voice broke through the air. "I missed you."

Santiago hugged him back tightly, his hands running through Milo's hair. I cuddled next to them, Santiago wrapping the three of us in a blanket. We spent the rest of the night watching a movie with Armando and Mariana, letting our thoughts leave for just a moment.

Later that night Milo slept in between us, Armando and Mariana had gone home early in the night. I was wide awake listening to the soft breathes of both Santiago and Milo. It had only been  seven months and my life had changed so much I felt like I was different as well. I was a parent, I was in a relationship with someone I felt I couldn't let go, and I was part of a family. And yet, I wouldn't change anything. Though scary at first, I felt whole and I hadn't felt that way in a long time.
