"We couldn't even remember it at first." Renjun said, sadly. His soft expression growing even more pretty as sorrow washed over him. "When we woke up and no one other than ourselves were there, we thought we'd been abandoned or something."
"Turned out the fire killed us all." Haechan sighed, shaking his head.
"All of you?", you repeated, devastated at the information. Wondering how awful it must've been then.
Jisung nodded his head and pursed his lips sadly, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his khakis. "There were 35 of us altogether, we tried looking for the other boys but...no one other than the seven of us showed up. Not even our caretaker."
"Yeah, and that geezer showed up to everything." Haechan added, "But then days turned into weeks which turned into months and eventually years, and now we don't even keep count anymore."
"All we do know is that we're dead but unlike the rest, remain stuck here." Renjun looked at you with those sad eyes of his again, and you almost wanted to hug him.
"Common sense says it's cause we have unfinished business", Chenle said then in a matter of fact voice, "But we can't really figure that one out too and since there's seven of us, it's safe to say we might have different unfinished business."
"But the song connects us all, right?" Jisung chimed in, "I mean, it's the only reason she's here, maybe that's our lead."
"You think we wanted to be in a choir before we died?"
"Lee Haechan could you stop your stupid jokes?" Renjun snapped.
Haechan raised both hands in the air and shrugged off-handedly.
"I'm just expanding the idea our little Jisungie has,you know he's not really our strongest thinker."
"Hey!"
"Okay." Mark cut in instantly, "Focus."
Then he turned to you with an apologetic smile and sighed.
"Yeah, and that's as far as our discussions go really..."
"That sounds tough..", you felt stupid for saying something so insensitive, but to be honest, you've never been the most comforting person. That was always your sister.
"I don't know if I can actually help but if I can...", your voice trailed off for a bit as you took in the faces of the boys before you, still wondering if they're real or not.
"I mean," you cleared your throat, "I want to help if I can."
Mark smiled at you again and from there he began explaining how they all couldn't really remember a lot of details from when they were alive but somehow all of them were familiar with one specific song; the one you've been hearing recently.
"We're not really sure who the original singers even were." Mark said, exasperated, which made things a little harder for you because you've never heard it anywhere else but in the manor.
"But you all know it? Like the whole song?"
"As if we trained it by heart." Chenle replied, arms crossed.
"Maybe it was playing the night before the fire?". It honestly felt a bit sensitive to talk about their deaths so openly, but Mark reassured you that they were fine with it and you decided to take his word on it, even when it made you a little uncomfortable yourself.
They all looked so young after all. You couldn't help but wonder how short their lives must've felt since they went so early.
Mark felt a little bit older to you but not because of his looks, it was more of how he carried himself, and how natural he seemed at containing the others. You found out a little later that Jisung was the youngest and that he was only fifteen. Exactly your age.
