"You like Hinata, right?" Suga asks and Kageyama feels his heart racing, his lunch threatening to spill out of him.
When Kageyama arrived at practice that day, Suga had pulled him aside and asked if they could talk. Never in a million years would he have expected that this was what Suga wanted to talk about.
"What? No I don't." Kageyama says. Had he really been that obvious with his crush on the orange haired boy? "What do you mean? Why are you asking? Are you making fun of me?"
"Woah, woah, slow down, Kageyama. I'm not making fun of you, I promise," Suga assures. "I've just noticed that you two have been get pretty close and I was just curious, that's all."
Kageyama relaxes only slightly. "Well, I do like Hinata," Kageyama begins and Suga looks excited, "because he is my friend," Kageyama finishes, crushing Suga's excitement.
"Just a friend?" Suga asks.
"Yeah," Kageyama says. Suga is a really nice guy, and Kageyama does have some trust in him, but he's just not willing to tell anyone yet. "What did you think I was going to say?"
"Ah don't worry about it," Suga says, a smile placed on his lips and Kageyama eyes him suspiciously.
The rest of practice Kageyama is self-conscious around Hinata. If their senpai had noticed the change in Kageyama's feelings for Hinata, who's to say Hinata himself won't notice. Kageyama just hopes he hasn't figured it out already. Hinata is pretty dense though, so he probably hasn't.
"Kageyamaaaaa," Hinata calls out at the end of practice, and he doesn't sound happy. He rushes over to Kageyama angrily. "Why didn't you toss to me?" He points a finger on Kageyama's chest accusingly.
Kageyama tries not to smile, Hinata is cute when he's angry. But I guess he is angry with Kageyama so maybe Kageyama shouldn't be smiling.
"It's one practice, dumbass," Kageyama says, shrugging on his jacket. The two start walking out of the gym together. "I toss to you all the time."
"Yeah. And that's the way it should be so keep doing it," Hinata demands grumpily. "Otherwise Kenma will become my favorite setter."
Oh no he didn't.
"Fine, I'll toss to you tomorrow," Kageyama says. His goal was to stay away from Hinata a bit at practice but he guessed that plan had just flown out the window.
"Thank you," Hinata replies stubbornly, smiling at Kageyama. Kageyama really likes Hinata's smile and everytime he sees it he thinks he might pass out.
Meanwhile, Suga was at home, thinking up a plan to get Kageyama and Hinata together. He smiled to himself as the perfect idea came to him.
The next day, he began putting his plan in action. His plan was to get Kageyama to confess to Hinata and he was going to do that through the power of manipulation. Suga really is an amazing friend, helping his teammates out like this.
There were two steps to the plan:
Step one - Plant the idea of confessing into Kageyama's brain.
Step two - Get Kageyama and Hinata alone, giving Kageyama the perfect opportunity to confess.
Now that he has the plan, all Suga has to do is execute. Once volleyball practice was over for the day, Suga walked up to Kageyama getting ready for the first step of the plan.
"Kageyama!" Kageyama turns to look at Suga. "Did you hear? A girl is planning to confess to Hinata. I heard she's very pretty and I'm sure Hinata will accept." He grins evilly. "Unless, maybe if someone else were to confess to him first."
Suga gauges Kageyama's reaction. He seems to be thinking deeply, which is a good sign. Suga can see the speck of protectiveness in Kageyama's eyes. Finally, Kageyama speaks. "I'm surprised someone actually wants to confess to that dumbass, but good for him, I guess."
Kageyama seems to be holding up well, on the outside. But Suga can see through his facade. Step one is complete. Suga subtly smiles to himself.
The next day at volleyball practice Suga invites Hinata and Kageyama to hang out with him. Hinata is surprised but flattered, agreeing immediately and forcing Kageyama to agree as well.
So after practice was over, the three of them walked to a park nearby. "Let's go sit over here," Suga suggests, pointing at a nearby bench.
The three of them walk over to the bench when Suga's phone begins ringing. It was Nishinoya, who had agreed to help Suga out with his plan. Suga looks at Kageyama and Hinata fake sympathetically. "This is my mom, I better take this, be right back!"
With that, he leaves Kageyama and Hinata sitting on the bench by themselves. There's an awkward tension in the air because of the semi-romantic atmosphere of the park.
"Congratulations, by the way," Kageyama tells Hinata. He doesn't look at him while he says it, scared his facial expressions will betray him.
"For what?" Hinata asks, confused. He had no clue what Kageyama was talking about.
"I heard a girl was planning on confessing to you," Kageyama explains, bitterly. "You didn't hear?"
"Uh, nope!" Hinata says. "I mean, that's cool and all but I probably won't accept. I sorta have a crush on someone else right now."
Kageyama feels relieved but jealous at the same time. Who does Hinata like? Kageyama thinks about what Suga said earlier. Unless someone else confesses first. Kageyama scolds himself for even thinking that. Hinata doesn't like him, it would ruin everything.
So instead of confessing, he just waits with Hinata until Suga comes back. Once Suga comes back he looks at the two, accessingly.
"So, anything interesting happen while I was gone?" he asks the two, hoping that Kageyama has listened to him and confessed.
Apparently, he didn't. "Uh no, not really," Hinata laughs awkwardly and Suga curses at Kageyama in is his head.
"Oh, I see." Suga says. Maybe he was rushing things a bit. He knows that those two will work it out in the end, even without his help. Maybe he'll just let things be for now.
