Kageyama was waiting for Hinata before school in their usual spot. Hinata was late and Kageyama was getting irritated. He decided to just leave the dumbass, not wanting to be late for class.
While he was walking to the classroom, he caught a glimpse of orange hair by the vending machine. He is about to charge up to Hinata and demand to know why he didn't meet Kageyama like usual.
Until he notices that Hinata's not alone. He's with a girl, one that Kageyama recognizes as one of their classmates. He feels his chest tighten, as if someone were squeezing it.
The girl is smiling at Hinata, her hand on his shoulder. Kageyama wants to go over and rip Hinata away from her grip. She begins leaning in and Kageyama feels like the world is moving in slow motion.
He wants to do something, to stop this from happening, but he feels frozen, like he can't move. All he can do is watch in horror as the girl connects her lips with Hinata's.
Finally, he regains the ability to move his legs and he hurries away from Hinata, trying to get away from him as fast as he can. He hears Hinata call his name.
But he doesn't stop, not until he reaches his classroom and is sitting in his seat, heart beating quickly. Hinata has a girlfriend.
Kageyama's worst fear has come true. Kageyama tries to calm himself down, tries to stop the jealousy and sadness from entering into him. It doesn't work.
"Kageyama," Hinata says, out of breath, standing in front of Kageyama's desk. "Why'd you ignore me? I was calling your name."
"So I guess you have a girlfriend now," Kageyama says, fists clenched at his sides. "Good for you dumbass."
"Girlfriend? What? No, I don't-" Hinata tries to explain to Kageyama before he's cut off.
"I'm actually dating someone too," Kageyama says and he doesn't know why he says it. Part of him is humiliated and he doesn't want to feel like that.
Hinata frowns. "Oh, um, that's cool," he lies. "But you know I'm not dating anyone, right?"
"You're not?"
"Uh no." Hinata says. His usual smile is gone, a frown taking its place as he imagines Kageyama with someone who isn't him. "Congratulations, though."
"Oh. Right," Kageyama says. Why did he tell Hinata he was dating someone? God he's so stupid. "Um thanks."
Hinata goes to sit in his seat and Kageyama just wants the day to be over already. He can't believe he lied to Hinata. He's a horrible friend.
In fact, he's always a horrible friend. Calling Hinata insults and being mean to him. But worst of all, he's a horrible friend for getting a crush on the one person who actually likes him for who he is. Of course he had to go and ruin everything.
Across the room, Hinata stares out the window glumly. This is the worst day ever. He just wants to go home already.
Practice that day didn't go well. Hinata and Kageyama are unable to sync up and they barely got any quicks in. They were both in a bad mood, and it was obvious to the rest of the team, therefore affecting their practice as well.
Kageyama still waits for Hinata after practice, but they don't talk while they walk. Instead, a silence in the air hangs around them.
"Bye, Kageyama," Hinata mumbles. He hops on his bike and rides home, trying his hardest not to cry. He'll save that for when he gets home.
Hinata goes straight to his bed, flopping himself onto his pillows. That's when the tears start to fall. Hinata knew he didn't have a chance with Kageyama, but now that reality just seems so real.
"Nii-chan?" Hinata doesn't turn around, not wanting Natsu to see him in this miserable state. He feels someone standing next to him and he feels small arms wrap around him. "Nii-chan, why are you sad?"
"It's ok, Natsu. I'll be ok." Hinata tells her. He just wonders what Kageyama's doing right now. And who he's with.
Kageyama was already upset before he got home, but when he arrives home he sees Miwa packing her stuff, he loses it. He had forgotten she was leaving today.
"Tobio?" Miwa asks when she sees her brother's sad face. "What happened? Is everything alright?"
Kageyama doesn't reply, instead he hugs Miwa, starting to cry into her shoulder. She returns the hug, rubbing his back and telling him that everything will be ok.
But it won't. Because Miwa's leaving and Kageyama will have to be alone in this big empty house again and things are weird between him and Hinata and he just doesn't know what to do.
"I'm sorry Tobio, I have to get back and continue my schooling," Miwa tells him. "I would love to stay here with you if I could."
"I know," Kageyama mumbles.
"Are you going to tell me what happened," Miwa asks. "Does it have something to do with Hinata?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
Miwa sighs, stroking Kageyama's hair. "Let's watch a movie before I have to leave."
Kageyama starts to feel better. He'll have to straighten things out with Hinata tomorrow and tell him that he isn't dating anybody. Which is going to be terrifying because then Hinata will want to know why Kageyama lied.
Kageyama doesn't think he's ready to tell Hinata about his feelings, but maybe it will help him finally get over the orange haired boy. And who knows, maybe Hinata likes him back. Probably not.
So Kageyama has decided. Tomorrow. He is going to tell Hinata about his feelings tomorrow. For real this time.
He's tired of pretending. He's tired of lying. He needs to just rip off the band-aid and get it over with. He just hopes that Hinata will still want to be friends with him. He knows Hinata probably will because he's just nice like that.
Still, the thought that confessing could ruin everything between them is really scary. But Kageyama is going to face his fears.
