Module 3: Adrenaline (epinephrine) injectors
Adrenaline is a hormone in the body and safe to inject, that reverses life threatening anaphylactic sx, supporting breathing, maintaining cardiac function and blood pressure. This medication works within minutes and lasts approximately 10-20 minutes. It is better to administer adrenaline than to not. Under-treatment is more life threatening than over-treatment of a mild/moderate reaction.
If no response occurs within 5 minutes, further adrenaline may be administered.
Temporary side effects include tachycardia, trembling and pallor (pale skin). Recognise that due to this, someone may still look unwell even after adrenaline has been administered.
Injectors contain fixed adrenaline doses, designed for those without medical training.
Inject into outer mid-thigh, and can be given through a single layer of thin clothing. Can be self administered, and includes instructions and expiry date on label.
Storage of Injectors
Store in cool, dark rooms between 15-25°C. Do not refrigerate as this can interfere with the reliability of the injection mechanism.
An adrenaline injector should be stored with either a 🔴RED ASCIA Action Plan clearly labelled with person's name, or an 🟠ORANGE ASCIA First Aid Plan for Anaphylaxis, if they are general use (not prescribed to person).
Types of Adrenaline Injectors
Note: This information is for Australia and New Zealand.
There are two brands available for adrenaline injectors. Action Plans are specific to the brand available.
