"I'm glad you've decided to stay longer Hiccup. The village will really need yer guys' help."
"It's nothing Dad, we're glad to help," I responded. It had been a mere two hours after the string of earthquakes. Ever since it had been relatively calm... if you don't count the mobs of scared and confused villagers gathering outside our hut, demanding an explanation.
"Well, I can say on behalf of the entire village, we're all very grateful for that help."
We continued our walk to the great hall. A majority of the villagers were spending the night there, as their houses were destroyed or they were helping the people who had gained injuries from the anomaly. My father decided he needed to announce our extended stay, even though I told him it was unnecessary.
As we reached the massive doors leading to the inside, I was surprised to find the statue that had fallen over earlier, had been put back in place. When the vikings worked with the dragons we could really accomplish a lot together quickly.
When the doors opened all heads turned in our direction and the whole room quieted down. My father stood there for a solid ten seconds, staring back at all the eyes looking at him. Then, strode down the empty walkway, with confident posture, towards the stone platform. While climbing the few steps to reach the top, Stoic the Vast prepared to talk to his people.
He stopped in the center and starred down at his people. His confident and calm face was impossible to read. If I didn't know what he was going to say I wouldn't have been able to tell if it was bad or good news.
"The crevice has stopped filling," he stated simply. You could feel the tension easing in the room. Quiet chatting began between people, as they waited for more news. "The dragon riders are going to extend their stay and help us with restoring our town, as well as search for our missing dragons." At that part many questioning and confused noises spread throughout the hall. But if you looked past all the confusion you could hear the relieved sighs of the vikings whose dragon companions had not returned. "The dragon riders have informed me of the disappearance of the Nadders. They seem to have departed the village during the first earthquake and not returned." More gasps echoed in the hall at the sudden news.
I took this opening as my chance to give an announcement of my own. I quickly jogged up the steps and stopped next to my father. All talking stopped and every head was back to looking at the stage. I looked out at the crowd, trying to imitate my fathers confident expression. "We do actually have an idea on where the Nadders have gone, and will spend some of our time here looking for them." A lot of understanding sounds followed that announcement, but I saw some disapproving head shakes.
I guess our helping out really is that important to them in the reconstruction.
My father took over again, "That is all," and left out the great hall's doors. The quiet chatter that had been there before me and my father arrived, started up again.
I walked down the steps over to where Astrid and Fishlegs were standing. Both their houses had been destroyed during the earthquake, so they would be spending a few nights here, while their houses were rebuilt. The others were staying at their own houses for the night, seeing as they weren't destroyed.
"Was anything salvageable?" I asked, standing in front of them.
"Most of the books were spared, but other than a couple family heirlooms, nothing much," Fishlegs responded, with a somewhat forced positive expression.
