CHAPTER 9

respect.

SOON ENOUGH, THEY WERE IN THE MED HUT, LOOKING AT ALBY SITTING SILENTLY ON THE EDGE OF THE BED. "Has he said anything?" Minho asked.

"No." Teresa said. Newt was the first to crouch down beside the boy.

"Alby?" He spoke. "Alby, you all right?" he asked concerned. The leader had tears in his eyes, obviously upset about something unknown to the rest of them. Thomas then crouched down on the floor right in front of him.

"Hey, Alby. Alby, we might have just found a way out of the Maze." Thomas said, trying to get some sort of reaction out of the boy. "You hear me? We could be getting out of here." Alby simply shook his head lightly, tears still gathering in his eyes.

"We can't." He said. "We can't leave." His voice broke part way through. "They won't let us."

"What are you talking about?" Thomas asked both concerned and confused.

"I remember." The statement surprising everyone in the hut in that moment.

"What do you remember?" Thomas said, wanting to get answers to the many questions he had.

"You." Alby simply said, looking down at the boy. "You were always their favourite, Thomas. Always." His voice continued to break as he spoke. "Why did you do this? Why did you come here?" Alby said, becoming increasingly distressed, tears now beginning to run down his face. The boy locked eyes with Oizys for a moment before turning back to stare at the floor.

As the boy went silent once again, the group began to slowly make their way out of the hut. As Oizys was about to walk out, Alby spoke up. "Zee." He said catching the girls attention. Though receiving a few confused and curious looks, she was soon left alone with Alby. He quietly shuffled over on the bed. Unsure what it exactly meant, Oizys slowly walked over to the boy before sitting next to him on the cot, leaving enough space between them.

The girl simply looked at him, wanting to give him as much time as he needed and not wanting to rush him. "I need you to know something." He said before going silent for a few more moments. In what was supposed to be a comforting manner, Oizys gently placed her hand onto his shoulder, wanting to show the boy that she would be there when he was ready. "I don't blame you for any of it." The statement only confused her further. "You didn't know what you were doing. I need you to know, that no matter what, I'll still trust you. I always will." He said as he slowly turned to make eye contact with her.
