CHAPTER 1

hey, greenie.

THE SIREN OF THE BOX ALARM BLARED IN HEAR EARS CREATING A RINGING THAT COULDN'T GO UNNOTICED. The whole of the Glade rushed over, creating a loud commotion, disrupting the peace and quiet that had been present only moments before. As the metal hatch over the Box lifted open, they all crowded closer to the unopened gates, eager to see the new Greenie they'd been brought. The gates were pulled open, everyone peering over the edge into the pit, and down at the new boy lying scared beneath them.

"Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine." Gally yanked out the kid, not bothering to provide him with a soft landing. As dust was kicked up by him harshly hitting the dirt and grass, he quickly became swarmed with the rest of the Gladers standing above him.

"Kid looks like a Slopper to me."

"I could use some help in the kitchen." The Gladers spoke, all eager to meet the teen that would soon be welcomed as one of them. Despite the obvious look of fear and shock planted on the boys face, the Gladers continued to huddle around, loudly cackling at his expressions. As he slowly pulled himself up off the ground, he swiftly dashed off, away from the group. Uncaring of the continuous yelling behind him, the boy continued to sprint away. Using up the moment of adrenaline he had been granted, his ears quickly began to produce an irritating ringing before he stumbled over, back down into the grass beneath his feet.

As he came back to his senses, he looked out to the scene painted around him. His mind was attacked with combinations of emotions, confusion, fear, worry, as he attempted to understand the sight he was being presented with. Moss covered walls towered around him on every side, the wall ahead of him containing what seemed to be a small entrance. The space he stood in was seen to be a field covered in bright green grass, with obviously handmade, wooden structures planted around. Next to him, he found a forest, thick trees creating heavy shadows on the ground, shielding whatever lied under them from the harsh sun above.

Before he could fully comprehend whatever he had just been made part of, he felt himself being thrown against the floor once again, only this time, it appeared he had been locked in some type of cage. He reached up to the door, looking out and seeing the boys that had once been crowded around him, now out in the field he previously stood in, wandering around. Suddenly he was met with a deep voice, and legs stepping directly in front of him. The boy crouched down, right outside the door.
