Walking through the now powerless building made me feel grateful

Walking through the now powerless building made me feel grateful. Grateful that I survived. However I didn't feel sorry for those who died back there, at least I tried not to after I came to the realisation that being upset over everyone who died would be an exceptionally large weakness in a world where dozens died everyday.

My only concern right now was finding somewhere to stay, I knew that the streets wouldn't be adequate here considering the mass amount of deranged people running around.

As I exited the building through the backdoor, I was lead into a narrow alleyway. The menacing eyes of a group of gangsters met mine, making my heart sink as they took a quick step towards me.

crap

"What do we have here?" a tall, brown haired woman said as she reached for her pocket knife. You continued to take steps back to the backdoor, not daring to look away from them. "What are you running for? We just wanna talk to you." The man beside the original woman snickered, before talking a leap towards me.

My instincts told me to threaten them back, maybe I could scare them off? I thought to myself as I began to furrow my eyebrows, making the gang laugh. Never mind, they weren't threatened at all.

As I grew closer to the door, they took another large step closer to me, and before I thought it could get any worse, the door knob I'd reached for was now locked. Crap it was locked from the inside, what kinda idiot builds a door like that? I thought as my back pressed against the door.

They were growing closer by the second, gradually taking out any weapons they had hidden in their pockets. "Nowhere to go, huh?" The tall woman spoke, before taking another uncomfortable step towards me, making her knife centimetres away from my throat.

I was caught off guard when the voice of an attractive, long legged woman spoke from the top of the alleyway wall. "Hey idiots, I have cards, come get me!" she shouted, before showing her large collection of cards in her hands, and running back down the alleyway wall.

To my surprise, almost all the gang members nodded to each other, before running into the darkness of the alleyway in an attempt to follow after her. Who was that woman and why would she help me? I thought.

The woman's diversion created enough time for someone on the opposite end of the door to unlock it, and pull me through. Before closing the door on the female gang member.

Whoever had saved me had thrown me to the ground in the process of saving me, making me land on the hand I'd injured in the hop scotch game. I let out a small groan as I sat up holding my hand, which was now beginning to bleed due to the force of hitting the ground.
