Miles
It seemed like something was missing. I didn't know what it was and I didn't even know if it was a new feeling or an old feeling. Skye was still recovering from her head injury. I was still confused about what had happened, from what I heard Emma had hit her. But why would she ever do that? She seemed nice and mannerly when I met her.
The others must have thought so too because they went to find her after they heard she was missing. I would have helped but I wanted to stay with Skye. I headed to her room, which like me when I had fallen, was turned into a makeshift infirmary. I thought back to when I was sick. I remember someone being with me but I couldn't remember who. Weird.
As I arrived at Skye's room I knocked softly and stepped inside. She was sitting up sipping some water when I entered. She smiled as she saw me. I grinned back at her.
"Feeling better?"I asked, she nodded, grimacing as she did so. I dropped to a chair next to her.
"What happened with Emma? One minute you were fine and the next I hear you're unconscious."
Skye shrugged, her mouth in a tight frown.
"I just told her something she didn't like very much." I tilted my head in confusion. Her brown eyes radiated sadness, but something else was behind it. Her shoulders were square and she held a steady gaze with me. This morning she was totally broken, nearly unconsolable as she cried into my arms. What had changed? I thought back to this morning.
I woke up to a knock on my door. I opened it and saw Skye. Her face was long and she had dark circles under her eyes. My face fell from a smile, I grabbed her hand.
"Are you okay?"
"Get dressed."
I nodded quickly and ran back into my room. When I came back out I saw Skye on the floor next to my room. Her face was in her hands. I grabbed her arm and lifted her up gently.
She put her hand on my arm and I led her down the hallway. I passed by a window and was surprised to see that the sun had not even peeked over the horizon.
"Why did you wake me up so early?"
She bit her lip, but shrugged. "I don't know, I guess I was just trying to wake up earlier than. . . Nevermind."
I took my hand off her shoulder and grasped her hand. She looked at me and tears sprung in her eyes.
I quickly released her hand. Was that offensive for her? Did I do something wrong? I thought back to the last couple of weeks. She was the only one I could remember really having a conversation with the last couple weeks. There was something missing in my heart, and I remembered that she had kissed me when I had come back. What was I doing wrong? Did I rush into things?
I opened my mouth to say I was sorry but I closed it as she reached out her hand.
She grabbed my hand again and rested her head on my shoulder. Her tears wet my shirt. What was going on?
I looked at her head resting on my shoulder. I tilted my head, somewhere in my mind I remembered someone else doing that exact same thing. But I couldn't remember who.
The day was chaotic after breakfast. I couldn't understand why the new girl Emma brought Skye to tears. I couldn't understand why everyone looked at me weird when I asked her who she was.
When Skye ran out I followed her trying to figure out what was happening. I grabbed her arm so she couldn't run anymore. I brought her into a hug, trying to help her and maybe trying to help me.
This day couldn't get any more confusing.
In the back of my mind I remembered doing this yesterday. What was going on? I shook my head trying to shake out all the uncertainty. Skye looked up at me to see what the motion was.
