━ ARTEMIS COULD FEEL THE STARES FROM THE PEOPLE WHOSE HOME SHE HAD ENTERED UNINVITED. The prolonged glances were filled with mixed emotions of curiosity and hostility because, after all, she was a demon living amongst them. While it had been over a decade since the first war and the Na'vi had begun to accept them as more avatars were created, the presence of Artemis's unknown avatar made people feel uneasy.
Artemis trailed behind Jake as they headed toward a cluster of metal modules. She observed that they were in a cave system inside the hallelujah mountains from the gaps in which the ikran flew through. The absence of natural light was substituted with campfires inside tents and artificial lamps in every dark corner.
The pair climbed the stairs up to a lab module and Jake opened the door for Artemis to enter. She ducked her head under the doorframe and was hit with a wave of unfamiliar atmospheric air. Jake handed her an exopack and a mask for her to breathe into as he made his way towards the back of the lab.
Artemis examined the link units lined up on the wall and the scientific equipment around her. She noticed three of the children from earlier by an amnio tank identical to the one she had previously been in. Two of them were Na'vi while the other was a human boy, all around the same age but still younger than her. They stared at her as she followed the older man to the secluded room.
A short man with glasses wearing a white trench coat greeted the two and turned to smile at Artemis. "Hi, my name is Max. Jake told me to run a few tests just to make sure everything's good with your mobility, nervous systems, et cetera."
Artemis nodded stiffly and sat on the edge of the bed while watching as Max stuck wires onto spots all over her body. Jake leaned against a metal pillar with crossed arms and pursed lips.
"Why were you sent here?" Jake asked the girl as Max walked out of the room with a tablet to monitor her vitals and give them privacy. He tried to neutralize his tone but he was admittedly threatened by her presence.
