The mission they gave me this time seemed to be more lax than usual. They got me a hotel to stay in and said I'd earned a break. They said I was allowed to shop and have fun but obviously if I stepped out of line the Grimes would be there in a jiffy.
Every ten missions they give us a 'break' or a slow mission. This happens when they want you to murder someone.
I decided I would go shopping. I hadn't had ice cream in forever. Then I noticed there was a girl following me.
I stopped.
"Going for ice cream too?" I ask.
"No, just trying to follow a cute boy, what's your name?" Her smile is like a thousand of the best flowers.
"Look, I can't..." I say dumbly.
"Sure you can." She says backing me up into an alley.
"It's Ax. How about you?"
"I'm Bethany." The name washes over me. How great a name that was.
"I like that name." She smiles and the freckles all over her face seem to brighten.
Then I realize that I shouldn't be doing this. It might jeopardize her and her family just if she speaks to me.
"Listen, You're cute and all but I have to leave."
"I'm afraid you can't," She says in a warning voice.
"What?" I am confused.
I realized it too late.
I try to defend myself but it's impossible. She's stronger and smarter than me even though I've trained all these years.
"Please, just stop," I ask her concerned that MBK will find her and terminate her too.
Soon she has me pinned to the floor.
"Why."
I know the grimes are coming and it is too late for her to get away.
"Please, they're coming. It might not be too late." I plead with her.
I try to tell her that but she quickly punches me unconscious.
AGENT WELL'S POV ongoing
The boy was stranger than anything that they could've prepared me for. Instead of acting like a jock or a nasty criminal, he acted like a boy who was concerned for me. Like a normal boy. Except for his eyes. They were empty of purpose, of hope. The way he was scared for me... Why did he say it might not be too late? Why was he scared for me?
I step into his cell.
"Bethany..." He says wanting to tell me so much but not knowing how to say it.
"Look Ax. I'm sorry. Actually, I'm not that sorry because you were my mission but..."
He smiles.
"You don't have to be sorry. It's not your fault they turned you into what you are. Just how it isn't my fault that I am what I am."
"What?" I ask confused.
He laughs.
"Look. Just let the interrogator come in. I know that I am in big trouble. I accept the consequences."
"Do you even know how much harm you've caused?" I ask still scared but puzzled at the character before me.
"Yes," He sighs then shudders.
"Just leave me alone. I don't want you to get mixed up in all this."
"You don't think I can handle it?"
"No, Just..." there it is again the hesitation. He wants to tell me but somehow, he can't.
"Fine, I can leave. I'll see you later after your interrogation."
As I walk out of the cell I wonder how he could be a murderer, thief, and so much more.
