Raven's POV

I sat on the couch, surrounded by my friends. There were people there I'd actually forgotten were even in my grade. Despite my protests, they had thrown me a surprise going-away party, complete with cake, pizza, and a stash of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The party wasn't as bad as I had expected. Even people I didn't realize were my friends seemed to be having a great time.

Everyone joked about how they'd have to greet me with a salute—assuming I made it into the program—and I had to constantly remind them that I wasn't joining the army; I was just studying in their facility. They quickly dismissed my logic with sarcastic remarks and moved back to their jokes. Time passed quickly, as if it were in a rush to get somewhere else, and soon it was almost time to start packing up.

I stood by the sink, washing and drying the dishes as they were passed to me, when a hand was placed lightly on my arm. I turned and was pulled into a tight hug. I'd know this person even with my eyes closed.

"Leo, I didn't think you'd make it. Everyone told me you weren't coming, and to be honest, I was a bit upset. I've done a lot for you—not that you care."

Never mind how you hurt me and kind of used me, I thought. Why am I still friends with you? Oh, yeah. That's why.

"Hey! That hurt!"

He chuckled before taking a subtle step forward, almost nudging me into the sink. He was probably drunk, high, or both.

"I was busy with some things, but I sorted them out quickly. I couldn't miss saying goodbye; I knew somewhere along the line you'd come back to kill me anyway."

So, he broke up with her. And now I'm just a rebound. Nope.

"I'd kill you before I left, never mind after," I joked, trying to create some space between us. I failed.

"Do you need me to put these dishes away for you?"

"What? Oh, no, you don't have to."

"It's fine, I don't mind."

"Thanks."

"My pleasure."

I handed him the plates with a shy smile and showed him where they went. Once he got the hang of it, I turned back to the rest of the dishes. I only had the cups and glasses left, which would be quick. I sighed deeply. I hate washing glasses.

PING!

I pulled out my phone, hoping it was someone I actually wanted to hear from. I doubted it; he had other priorities where he was now. Priorities like her.

Private Number: > You look absolutely delicious in black skinny jeans; they emphasize your ass perfectly. That top needs to be ripped off right away. I'm sure that will happen soon enough, though. Enjoy the party. -S

"What the actual fuck?" I muttered.

I typed back a quick "Fuck you"—even though I knew it probably wouldn't go through—before anyone saw me being antisocial.

"Who is this?" I added.

PING!

To my surprise, the message actually delivered.

Private Number: > Just call me another—BETTER—admirer of yours. ;) Love, -S

Okay... creepy as fuck. Moving on.

PING!

Now what?!

Private Number: > I hope you have a lot of fun. You look beautiful. I left a gift on your bed; I hope you don't mind. Enjoy it. -M
