"It's only until your grades start to pick up," my dad spoke quickly, not looking me in the eye. My mum, who had so far not said a single word since I had arrived home, rose from the table and wandered over to the fridge.
"Pizza or burgers for tea?" She flashed a false smile as if nothing was going on.
"I'm going out." I quickly grunted and slammed the front door shut before anyone could stop me. Why were they sending me away when I was finally happy? Since I had moved from my old town to this new one i'd actually made friends. Not lots, like other people, but special friends who I knew I could rely on, no matter what. Now everything was going to change, all because of a few bad grades.
Trying to control myself and not show any kind of sadness, I knocked on Lee's door.
He was the first friend I had made since I moved to Redcar. He was my across the road neighbour and came over with his family to welcome us to the neighbourhood. We hit it off straight away and have been friends for the past few months.
Lee opened the door and gave me his cheesiest grin. I must have hidden my emotions well because he didn't suspect a thing. The fact he hadn't noticed made me feel even more deflated then before.
"What are you doing here? I thought we were meeting at Penny's house around six..?" He scratched his dark hair and gave me a confused look.I couldn't hold the tears back anymore. They started to run down my cheeks as Lee pulled me into a tight hug.
"They're sending me to a boarding school.." I sobbed before he could ask what was wrong. Instead of saying anything, Lee just tightened his grip as if he didn't want to let me go. I didn't want him to let me go either."How am I going to manage without you Pips?" Lee finally let go of me and sighed. I couldn't help but smile when he called me Pips because he was the only one who did. My real name is Pippa, which I hate most of the time.
"At least you've got Penny, Chris and Kenzie, I've got nobody," I sulked.
"Don't ever say you have nobody," Lee held me at arms length and shook me gently, "you'll always have me, even if you're halfway across the world."
I smiled because he was right. Why would it matter if I was away for a few months or even a year? When I came back home everything would go back to how it was. At least that's what I hoped.
"I'm so glad you're my friend Lee," I looked up at him. His blue eyes shone but were covered with a glassy mist. "Don't cry, please," I wrapped my arms round Lee's neck and buried my head into his shoulder. "I'll be back before you know it.." I whispered.
If only I knew how big of a lie that was going to be..
