"What was that all about?" I turned to see a girl around my age, sat up in bed staring at me. Her blonde hair was messy, probably because she'd just woke up and she had black bags under her eyes.
"I have no idea," I lied. She raised her eyebrow but didn't ask anything else.
"I'm Yasmin," she smiled and got out of bed. I flicked the light switch on so I could see better. The room wasn't as small as I had expected and was decorated with posters around the room.
"I'll take some down if you want," she blushed a little as she saw me looking at the posters."No they're cool," I noticed a pierce the veil poster and smiled. "I love them!" I pointed at the poster. Yasmin smiled.
"You must be the only other person at this school that does, apart from me," she seemed genuinely happy as she helped me put my stuff into the big wardrobe that contained her clothes. "God it's good to finally have a roommate!"
"How come you haven't had one?" I asked.
She shuffled uncomfortably for a little then spoke, "they caught me smoking in the room and decided I shouldn't be allowed to share with anyone incase I intoxicate them."
"Oh so how come I'm with you now?"
"There mustn't be enough rooms or something," she shrugged and started to walk back to her bed. I thought she was going back to sleep but instead she opened up a draw containing socks and rummaged around for a while. After a few seconds or so, she pulled out a small box and smirked at me.
"You smoke?"I hesitated at first, thinking about how smoking causes cancer but then it dawned on me that maybe the only way to get out of this school was to get expelled. Jack had already told me that smoking isn't enough to get you expelled, but it was a start. "Yeah of course," I eventually said and joined Yasmin by the window. She was already expertly blowing smoke out after taking a drag. I took the fag in my fingers and inhaled the fumes.
Instantly I began to cough and Yasmin laughed."You do it like this," she showed me again and I mirrored her, managing not to cough this time. It seemed to relax me and make me forget about everything that had been stressing me out: this school, Lee, Jack and now the worry that I might get lung cancer.
"Pretty good for a first try," Yasmin smiled at me."How could you tell it was my first?"
Yasmin just raised her eyebrows and gave me a funny look that made me burst out laughing. We spent the early hours of that morning talking and Yasmin filled me in on what my lessons and teachers would be like. It was around 8am when there was a knock on our door.
"Come in," Yasmin shouted and a small, slightly round lady came in. "Oh hi June," Yasmin smiled."Hi Yasmin and you must be Pippa," she smiled at me. I'd already assumed June wasn't a teacher by the way Yasmin had spoke to her but she was way to old to be a student.
"Anyway I just came up here to introduce myself, I'm June your housemaster.. Is that what it's called?" She seemed unsure. "Anyway basically I stay in the room downstairs and if you've got any problems you come see me.""Okay," I smiled. And with that June left.
"She's really nice, the nicest one here," Yasmin smiled weakly. "We better get ready for school."
I nodded and started to pull out my school uniform that my mum had bought me a few days prior. Black tight trousers, a white shirt, blue tie and black jumper.
"How do you even tie a tie?" I asked Yasmin as she emerged from the en-suite we had in our room. She laughed at my confused expression and showed me what to do."You'll get used to it," she laughed while back combing her hair to add volume to it. She'd straightened her hair out whereas I had left mine wavy like I usually did. "Come on we better get going." She pulled on my arm and grabbed her bag. Following her, I slung my backpack over one shoulder and closed the door.
"Make sure you lock it," Yasmin warned. "God knows who would try to get in while we're gone.."
I wanted to ask exactly what she meant by that but before I could she was talking again about some random thing. As we ventured outside I was shocked at the amount of students roaming around, going to their first lesson.
"Where's Mr Pecan's chemistry class at?" I struggled to read my timetable.Yasmin groaned. "I wish you were in my Chemistry, but I'll show you the way before I go to.." She looked at her timetable and groaned again, "Maths."
All the corridors looked like a maze and I had no idea where I was going. Thank god for Yasmin. Eventually she stopped outside a classroom and wished me luck before heading off in the opposite direction.
Taking a deep breath I walked into the class and felt everyone's eyes fix on me. That's right everybody, stare at the new girl and make her feel intimidated.
Not entirely sure what to do, I walked over to the teacher who was sat by his desk drinking coffee from a large mug. Before I could speak, he smiled at me, "ahh you must be Pippa?" I nodded, glad that he wasn't like miss Turnile. He looked across the class and motioned for me to sit next to a dark haired boy with even bigger eyebrows then Jack.
Nervously I sat down, not trying to catch the boy's attention but luckily he didn't even seem to notice I was there. It was halfway through the lesson when he finally looked up from his textbook and whispered to me.
"Do you actually understand this shit?"Actually, Chemistry was one of the only lessons I liked but I wasn't going to admit to this and look like a nerd, so I shook my head.
"God you're such an awful liar," the boy chuckled and lowered his head again. I was about to open my mouth to protest when suddenly the door burst open. Miss Turnile glared in my direction but it wasn't me she was staring at.
"Alexander Gaskarth could you step outside please?" Her lips were pursed and her cheeks red. She was super angry. Alex looked up at me and smirked then turned his head back towards miss Turnile.
"No, maybe another time thanks."
