“Yeah, since that safety mental juggling that the Hawk did last week, i’m still suspended.”
“Come again?”
“They think i was the one that made that cow get defenestrated from the fifth floor– not that i was the one who did it, but that i brought in whoever did. You know, death threats.”
“To be fair–“
“Shut the fuck up, Crenzfi. Don’t want to hear your bullshit early in the morning.”
“... the hell’s got into you? I was going to say that they should trust you more. You’re a great journalist, Sancreyeth. Neyassen is needing you more than ever. Not only because i have good and legal news to give away about the vulture-adepts crisis, but also because the Demon just struck again, it seems.”
“...”
“This time, blinding the ragdoll wasn’t enough. The mantis fellow chopped her arms too. Figured it was with a blunt ax... poor thing still hasn’t recovered.”
“...”
Blind eyes, no arms...
Makes sense.
“This case is such a mess. First you think you have a pattern, then, the next second,”
Poor ragdoll, huh?
Oh poor her, but forget about the one she said was ‘just no fun'. ‘Oh, but i thought humans loved having cats around them!’
How many times have i heard this kind of shit before? Color me admired at how they always manage to think what they’re doing is a joke... sick joke, it is.
“there’s someone guilty as charged, and another streak of incidents right in Gakuensa just like these... blinded bats.”
And the demon is acting up now. Two weeks later. About these things done, do all the victims have this in common? Or was it chance? I know how this one hurt a friend. What about the others?
Silent stares filled the surroundings, as the snake’s eyes focused on thin air molecules, and the fox’s concerned gaze easily gave in to another cup of coffee, as he had nothing more to say. Maybe he’d also think, or revel in ambient silence for an answer.
Do i think they deserved it... whatever happened is the kind of issue that gets less credit than it trully deserves, but really, were slit limbs and lost eyes the way to payback? No, no, payback isn’t justice. It’s bloodshed.
But i don’t know how that felt. I can’t possibly imagine what happened later to Allijarti’s psyche that night. Was this incident a prayer for the Demon? Or plain out coincidence? Do they come aid those left in injustice of all kinds?
Too many blanks to fill in, yet...
“I think the Demon is a vigilante.”
“Now you’re thinking about it? All accounts say the victims are clean.”
“Well, how can you guess it?”
“... i’m a detective. I investigate. I learn from evidence and testimonies, and both say the targets were crystal clean, anything else my team would’ve shot away a while ago. Don’t say it’s a cover-up, they were all ordinary citizens.”
“Sometimes people don’t need to be registered in data to have done something putrid.”
“And sometimes you get things that might mean a lot in someone’s life but don’t matter in my field. Not in Vicenzo’s history, nor in Neyassen's. In points that weigh, none deserved to be hurt in such a way that made them disabled forever and lose their already small meaning of life. A fox lady – a fox like me – got her athletic son in a wheelchair overnight. Who do you think made that?”
“You only take the eye slits as the Demon’s doings, don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Then we’re not on the same page. Arson in Kaulitzi, back in September. That canine biology professor had a hard cover-up for the students he kept on–“
“It was a gas leak, Sancreyeth. That house the guy rented was a nightmare by itself, three hundred years old, some issue would come up a time or another, god’s sake.”
“But you do recognize he was a criminal.”
“Of course. Always had my tail bristling up near him. Glad we got him arrested.”
“And you also recognize that you guys never caught the one that messed up with the pipes? Don’t say you don’t know about the ancient rents overhaul they did a day before what happened.”
“Are you implying i missed something?”
“You did.”
The reporter lifted a point by making a pinching gesture with his thumb and index.
“A very specific bolt this small fell near the riverside. The house exploded. I found this by accident while walking around, and just past-yesterday had i thought about it again. It was from the house, and i can pinpoint exactly where it came from: just taking this away made a whole cascade of malfunctionings to happen inside the pipes in just a few hours.”
“How the hell...”
“Too many people were inside that place that afternoon. At least a hundred, not to count those who left and those who came in later. Who?”
“I’d ask when.”
“At least after the noon. Stopped paying attention to the small rooms after so.”
“How helpful... does your fantastic memory recall anyone who got in there, at least?”
“A few, but i don’t have photographic memory. I took a few recordings but... too much a hustle, quality was ass.”
“Fucking fantastic. Then it was a gas leak caused by a sociopath bolt. The hell changes?”
“So interested in learning about the Demon, aren’t you?”
“Let’s call it a wrap for now. Because just like you don’t want to hear my bullshit early in the morning, i don’t to hear about your lost cases right now. But if anything, fill me a report with your testimony to check later... i have to thank god you’re not a liar.”
“...”
Thinking about it now... i left Haavarti alone for a while, at that party before those contest results. No, that has nothing to do with anything. He might agree with the mantis-head in some aspects, but... how many fans does this vigilante has already? Anyone could admire such a figure of power and mystery, even in secret. Try to imitate it, even. Then again, who?
“Eight o’clock. Will hit the road. Go visit your jeweller friend if you’re bored, got your key copy by the fridge’s drawing board. You should take that thing somewhere else, it’s blocking the way.”
“It’s a magnet drawing board, can’t help it; Rakkiard is a real buddy.”
“Shit’s got a name? Already going insane? It's just been a week...”
“Don’t call her ‘shit’! She– she actually listens to people! And she speaks sometimes!... when i’m piss drunk.”
“And the emergency number is also next to the fridge. Don’t call me for help anymore, just call the ambulance. Until night.”
“Boo.”
