FIRST REPORT: COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE OF MINERALS
What is a MINERAL?
A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic solid with a definite chemical composition and ordered atomic arrangement.
3. INORGANIC PROCESSES - tanan nga material nga na produce trough organic activity(e.g. leaves, bone, peat, shell or soft animal tissue) kay dili ma consider na organic, in short dapat sa inorganic ra jud siya na process mo agi.
4. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION- halos mga minerals kay nag exist as chemical compounds, tapos ang minerals kay composed of two or more elements (e.g. salt & halite is NaCl which is Sodium and chlorine)
—There are approximately 4000 known minerals
—Only 8 elements make up 98.5% of the crust's total mass
—Most minerals are compounds
—More than 90% of the minerals on the Earth's crust are compounds containing O, Si, the two most abundant elements.
—Rocks are considered to be a combination of one or more minerals.THE STRUCTURE OF MINERALS
Crystal- any solid material in which the component atoms are arranged in a definite pattern and whose surface regularity reflects its internal symmetry.
The following are some of the defining features of a crystal;
•Crystal Structure
••Regular, geometric, smooth faces
•Orderly arrangements with repeating structures
••Each mineral always forms the same crystal shape
•Six basic crystal shapes
••Crystallographic axes are used to determine structure
