Tensions started to die down, I no longer had the urge to escape. Though had no clue what humans were supposed to do. In a pack, everyone worked together to survive. Humans were just, independent.
Nathan and I sat for breakfast chatting. He told me a story of when Roger and him encountered a bear in the woods.
"-and the bear, fell over the waterfall." He laughed.
I laughed along with him, though I didn't get why that was so funny. What was funny to me is Nathan's laugh, like a strained girly giggle.
"Are we going anywhere?" I asked. He put his feet up on the table.
"No. I'm feeling lazy."
"Movie?" I smiled. He nodded grinning back at me.
He put in The Little Mermaid, one of my favorites. We sat down on the couch and put our feet up on the coffee table. He wrapped his arms around me, not anything out of the ordinary and kissed the top of my head. A strange feeling arose in my chest, like a flutter.
We were almost to the end of the movie when I heard the doorbell.
"Probably just a sales person." Nathan sighed pausing the movie and getting up. I followed him to the door trying to stay out of sight.
I couldn't see over Nathan's tallness, if that's a word, but heard speaking, then a gasp.
"Ariel!" He called.
I peered through the doorway to gaze at a tall woman and a girl next to her. I didn't reconize the woman but the girl, looked like me.
The woman enveloped me in a bear hug and I knew why they were here, to assassinate me by suffocation.
"I'm so glad I found you!" The woman cried. I pulled away and hid behind Nathan.
"Are you sure she's your daughter?" He asked nervously looking back to the girl and me.
The woman nodded with a shrilly hapiness.
"I had twins with my husband 18 years ago. We were so happy! My husband and I thought we'd never be able to have children. We decided to go hiking the summer of their 2 birthday, you know, get them used to nature so when they turned into teenagers they wouldn't be stuck at home on their phones! Halfway through the hike we had to stop for a break. We set them down and told them to stay. I don't know how Rose managed to get so far away! I blame it on her father, he was supposed to be watching her. But she ran off, and we never saw her again. After the um," She was near tears, but composed herself. ",incedent, I divorced her father. The deadbeat."
I looked at the girl. We looked exactly alike, down to the brown hair and hazel eyes.
"I want her back." The woman demanded desicevely with her hands on her hips.
She glared at Nathan feircely, reminding me of a mother lioness.
I glanced up at Nathan pleadingly shaking my head.
He looked at me hesitantly with sadness.
"Ariel doesn't want to go with you." He said turning his gaze to the woman.
"Her name is Rose!" She exclaimed angrily.
"Besides, she has to get proper mental treatment."
"Ariel Is not meantal! She's just fine here with me. I'm teaching her all she needs to know." He stuck his nose in the air pulling me closer to him.
"Don't be naive. She's been living with wolves her entire life! She doesn't know the meaning of learning."
"Yes I do." I faced the woman boldly and spoke more words in a sentence than I ever had.
"Nathan is teaching me just fine." I declared snootily.
She rolled her eyes, suddenly taking my hand and tried to drag me to her silver van. I kicked my legs and thrashed my arms.
"No!" I screamed. "Nathan!"
"I have custody over you. You're mine."
"NO! I DON'T BELONG TO ANYONE!"
She and the girl overpowered me, shoving me forcefully into the car while Nathan dashed to my rescue.
Nathan's attempt was worthless, He couldn't outrun the car.
My chest felt heavy yet empty and I felt tears threatening to break loose as we drove away from the person I loved. My care giver, my protector.
The girl sat next to me in the middle row of seets in their van. I glared at her. One day, I would bite her and her mother, hard, one day.
"So, Rose-" "Ariel!" I interupted her.
"You lived with wolves?" She asked.
Fascination shone in her big excited eyes.
"Yes." I said still eying her in anger.
"So, uh, my name's Lily."
"Why does your mother insist on naming everything after flowers?!" I yelled with poisen in my voice.
Lily winced, but recovered quickly.
"Our mother."
I rolled my eyes and ignored her for the rest of the way where ever we were going.
