Rays of morning sun shone through the bedroom windows onto your face. You opened your eyes and were confused for a minute while you recalled the events of last night.
Did I really break up with Rosé my last night? Is it really over after 7 years? Was it all a dream?

But as dawn's glow grew around the skyscrapers outside, you realized that it was for real. You had broken up with Rosé and were single now.

There was a profound loneliness as you lay alone in that big bed, the empty space beside you a cruel reminder that the last time Rosé would ever wake up next to you had already passed. It must've been almost a month ago. Back then, you'd had no idea it would be the last time.

The pain was right there, and you knew it would take a long time before it ever went away, but there was also a newfound sense of clarity and freedom about you.

No longer did you have to worry about what she was doing or when you would hear from her again. No longer did you have to depend on her for those brief moments of happiness which had grown more and more sporadic as the years passed. There was a fresh opportunity to find something else, or maybe someone else, and build your own happiness.

Just as you were experiencing the feeling of moving on for the first time you were suddenly wrestled out of it by your phone ringing. You looked at it with annoyance; it was almost as if someone didn't want to allow you to feel this way.

And as fate would have it, sure enough the call display name was the only person that could completely kill your new state of mind. The person you were trying to escape from. Her.

You picked up the phone anyway.

"Y/N... it's me... Rosie..." Her words were slurred and she was clearly still drunk or hungover.

"What do you want Chaeyoung? I just woke up and I'm really not in the mood to-"

"I want you! Because I really miss you, and I love you-"

A surge of anger made you fully awake. "Bullshit."

"Y/N!" she stammered, "I- I really fucking love you so much, I want to be by your side again... you're not really breaking up with me right? I love you-"

Every time she said the word love the knife dug deeper.

"Oh you love me? That doesn't mean much anymore. Are you even gonna apologize?"

"Huh...? Apologize... for what?" she sounded genuinely confused, although maybe she was just dopey from the alcohol.

"Are you fucking kidding me Chaeyoung? I saw that video of you twerking on that - fucking douche or whoever he was -"

"Oh... twerking..." it slowly started to sink in for her.

You were seething now. "Yeah that. You're a primmadonna and a cheater and we're done. I'm hanging u-"

"No, no, wait Y/N! Please!! I'm not a cheater!! I just, wait don't hang up on me!!! And what's a primma- primma-" She sounded hysterical, crying and barely coherent.

"Forget it, go live, have fun, fuck yourself up if that's what you want. I really don't care anymore."

"B-but, you said you'd always love m-me-

To your annoyance you felt a twinge of guilt. It was true. After being such a huge part of your life, your love for Rosé was unconditional whether she was your girlfriend or not.

But, right now she didn't deserve your sympathy. You sighed in exasperation. "Chaeyoung you're drunk. I don't want to fight a big war with you right now ok? Goodbye."

You hung up the phone, cutting off the sounds of her drunken pleads and sobs. You inhaled a sharp breath, so many mixed emotions pulling you in a million different directions.

The bedroom door suddenly creaked open and Hank waddled in to give you his morning greeting. He waited patiently at the foot of your bed, looking up at you while his tail wagged in excitement.

"Yeah it's ok Hankie, come on up."

As Hank leapt up onto the bed and began to nuzzle and paw you affectionately, for a moment you forgot all about the breakup with Rosé, playing with Hank and laughing. But suddenly reality struck and your face fell.

Hank noticed something was off and his excitement faded, his usually happy tail becoming still.

"I'm gonna miss you little guy" you said as you pulled him in for a hug.

He couldn't understand your words but he could read your body language and became extra clingy. You had to physically pick him up and move him off your lap to go make breakfast.

As you got going with the unpleasant task of packing up all your belongings from Rosé's apartment, you did your best to ignore Hank tugging at your pants as well as your heartstrings. At one point he even climbed into your open suitcase that was sitting by the door, as an attempt to pack himself to go with you.

"You have to stay here buddy" you said, lifting him out of your suitcase so you could zip it up and leave for good. You knelt down to pet him. "Don't worry, Aunt Alice will be here soon to take care of you."

You'd stepped halfway out the door with your last suitcase when you heard a loud whine and felt a familiar furball rub against the back of your leg.

"Not now Hankie," you said as you looked behind you. You felt a pang of sadness when you saw he was holding in his mouth the mini soccer ball you'd given him for his birthday. It was his favorite toy to play with you.

Before you had a chance to look away, he dropped the ball on the ground and kicked it towards you - just like you'd taught him to play pass.

You sighed and kicked the ball back to him. "Alright, one last game. You deserve it." It was true, since when times had gotten rough with Rosé he had always been by your side. You weren't sure how you would've got through it without him.

After playing pass until you and Hank were both tired it was finally time to say goodbye. You knelt down and gave Hank a big hug, and when you let go and saw his big sad eyes it almost broke you.

"Be a good boy for aunt Alice and Mom ok? She's going to need you."

You didn't expect him to understand but he replied with a sad whimper. What he did know was that you were leaving with all your things, and he didn't know if you'd ever be back again.

"Goodbye Hank." You stepped out of the apartment for the last time. The door felt painfully heavy to move as you watched the place you'd called home with Rosé slowly disappear from view.

As the door finally closed with a click, a beautiful 7 year chapter of your life closed along with it. It was a shame it had to end like this.
