The heart wants what the heart wants
December 3 2019
A smile rises on my lips.
It's a large grin that stretches for miles.
My heart swells with heat.
I reach out to shake Katie's hand.
She reaches back.
My grin goes wider.
Yes! We're finally friends!
My eyes snap open.
I look around my room, and stretch my arms.
It's the weekend and all I can think about is trying to be friends with Katie.
She makes it so hard.
I crawl out of my bed and over to my closet, picking out one of my favorite over-sized t-shirts.
They're my favorite thing to wear in my free time.
I pick up my phone and open the door to my bedroom. I walk down the hall, picking up my headphones on the way, and think about a new plan to be friends with Katie.
My last two plans failed miserably. I tried to talk to her, and then tried giving her a note but that didn't work. And about a week ago, I stopped trying.
But it's time to get back to it.
It's the weirdest thing. I feel like I need this girl in my life. But she keeps pushing me away.
She's something different.
And I love it.
I walk down to the kitchen and take a seat at the table.
"Morning honey, want some waffles?" My mom asks with a cheery grin on her face, dark circles looming under her eyes.
I nod my head and turn my phone on. I look at the top of my screen and swipe at my notifications.
I freeze.
There's a message from Katie.
Hi.
Wow. She actually texted me.
I write back, hey, how are you?
Three little dots pop up in the corner, then dip back down and dissappear.
I wait five more minutes, but no more messages come through.
My mom sits down at the table.
"How was your sleep? Any good dreams?"
"Yeah, I dreamed about making some new friends. It was nice."
"That's good! Now to make it a reality."
She chuckles to herself and cuts up her waffle.
I cut a price off mine when my phone buzzes. I look down and spot a message from Katie.
I'm good, thanks for asking!
A smiley face comes in a second later.
My own smile crawls across my face.
I finish up my food and plug in my head phones. Putting on my shoes, more buzzes spring from my phone.
I slip on my Hoodie and turn my music up.
I start my morning run, texting Katie the entire time.
What a girl.
