Everyone knew it was weird you and James got together, one random summer with you now named his girlfriend, a cute piece of eye candy to hang around his arm. you liked James and when he came to you after years of pining after Lily Evans with a kiss, telling you that you were so beautiful, how could he ever have overlooked you when you've been part of the same friend group for years.

Remus could see right through him, a hand on your thigh didn't send a spark through him like it did you, this was a distraction from Lily or even a ploy to get her jealous, and Remus' mind flipped between the two.

he wanted to know for sure his thoughts were right, what if it wasn't, he'd look like a jealous fool and lose you but not saying something could make him lose you too. james was another story, they were best friends and this wasn't like james at all and at first thought, this was someone polyjuice potioned as him but as time went on he knew it was james and no one else to blame it on but he was certain james would realize this was wrong but he wasn't certain about you, how you would react, as much as remus would like to gloat about knowing you and having an interest in you he wouldn't know everything like he knows james.

he didn't share a dorm with you like he had with james or how dorcas had with you, he didn't know how you acted when your feelings were hurt or how you acted around your super close friends, but he wished he did, though he'd hate to see you upset he would like to know and how to prepare for it, wish he knew how to comfort you in your time of need other than telling you he was sorry something had happened and that tomorrow would be a better day.

Did you like to be hugged? a simple shoulder rub? maybe just sit in silence.

it wasn't fair, it wasn't fair to you and maybe he was selfish for thinking it but it wasn't fair to him, watching your happiness be inflated with lies was enough to ruin his day. Remus tried not to act differently to his friend before hearing what made his conclusions right but he couldn't help but a few side eyes and sighs.

Remus was quiet, more quiet than normal and sirius and james picked up on it quickly, peter knew though, they were a lot closer than people thought since peter always had been stuck to sirius' hip.

Just after a week of you and james being together, Peter had cornered Remus in the library while james and sirius went to quidditch practice.

that's when their little tradition started, peter offered to shift to his animagus form so they could talk privately, remus carrying peter in his pocket as he walked to a spot he knew no one would go to, his own little spot when he was taking a break from people and if james or sirius did see him, he wouldn't be caught with peter. They developed a communication system with nudging and spins and remus spilled his thoughts to peter and when peter really wanted to say something back they would go to the third floor quickly since james and sirius did go there sometimes.

about a month in was when remus heard him say it, brushing his teeth and listening to sirius' and james' conversation as peter shaved the growing back hair on his face, he constantly complained that he hated the feeling of it on his face and that it grew back too fast while james complained he couldn't grow anything.

Remus was baffled, james couldn't even say your name, he referred to you as her and she when he couldn't even say your fucking name out loud. he stared at peter through the mirror and peter starred back the knowing look made him nod the softly.
