"Don't be stupid!" Jan shouts after her as she walks down to the barn. Her head agrees with Jan but her heart says keep walking. She can hear Christmas Dinner gobbling behind her but when she gets to the barn door he does not go in with her, choosing to rather settle down in the grass by the door. "Coward," she whispers down at him then takes a deep breath and goes inside. It's quiet, just bales of hay and an unsaddled Lightning. She walks around the barn but she can't see Austin anywhere. Then she sees a ladder and climbs up it. When she pokes her head into the loft she looks around and sees Austin sitting with his back to her on the ledge of an open window. She takes another deep breath and then climbs into the loft and tip-toes up to Austin. He does not acknowledge her. "Austin, I am sorry," she says softly but he ignores her. So she takes a deep breath and tries again.
"Austin-"
"Please don't."
Hazel breathes out and stands behind him, playing with the rhinestones on her hat. She does not know what else to do. She just stands and waits - for what? She does not know. Eventually, she puts her hat back on and turns to leave but then she hears Austin shift and when she looks back she sees Austin has moved in the window, leaving enough space for her to sit so she takes a breath and sits down next to him. She sees he has the envelope open in his hands and he is ripping the pages into tiny little pieces. Hazel keeps quiet and just waits for Austin to talk...or shout...or push her off - just something. They sit and watch the sun dip below the trees, the sky eventually turning that beautiful black velvet back as the stars begin to shine. When Austin finally talks, Hazel slowly feels the grime that has been seeping up her chest settle back down. She does not like Austin being at odds with her.
"I am sorry for fightin'," he says softly, gathering her in his arms and Hazel leans into him. "I know Evelyn can seem so grown and that is my fault. I push her too hard and expect too much of her...but she is only a child." Hazel pulls away from him, she wants him to see her face when she talks. "You are the best father I know. You have raised one hell of a girl. She is happy and healthy and proud and tenacious in the morals that you have instilled in her. She is also very, very loved. You have given her a good life. She is a reflection of you...smells better too," Hazel says with a little laugh at the end, Austin joins her. "I was a result of an affair and my father made sure to remind me of that. I was just an inconvenience, a black mark on his perfect little life. He didn't even bother to come to my mother's funeral. You are ten times the father and man he is. You were faced with a choice nine years ago and you chose to do right by that little girl...and you have."
Austin smiles at her and pulls her back to his chest, "thank you," he says softly. "Those men..." Hazel prompts. "They are nothing for you to worry about," Austin shuts her down. Hazel wants to push but she knows Austin will tell her when he is ready. For now, she will just stay on his side of the fence. "I am sorry I let you down. I promise it will never happen again...I will never put Evelyn in harm's way again. I swear," she mumbles into his chest. "I trust you," Austin says. Hazel never thought those three words would make her heart soar as it does, but then it drops. He should not trust her, she is a lier and a cheat. Austin pushes her out of his arms then stands up and reaches out his hand to her and pulls her up as she grabs it. "There comes a time in every rancher's lifetime when they start locking their barns. It's not uncommon to give a rancher a padlock on his daughter's 18th birthday...especially when there are young wild ranch hands around," he says leading her to a pile of hay. "Why?" Hazel asks confused. "I will show you," he says pushing her down onto her back on the hay. He bends and takes off her boots then kneels between her legs and undoes her belt buckle, sliding off her pants and underwear. Hazel huff's out a laugh and reaches out her hands to him. "Show me more," she says. Austin grins and dips his head between her thighs. When he licks into her, Hazels back arches and she groans at the electric shocks that shoot up her spine. Then suddenly he twists his tongue in a different direction and Hazel lets out a scream, disturbing a few pigeons that had been nesting on the rafters above her head. Austin lifts his head and smirks at her. He is lying with his ankles crossed and when he cocks his head to the side Hazel thinks he looks way too confident for his own good. "You taste like summer fruit," he says then dips his head and licks into her again, Hazel lets her head fall back as she groans. "Berries," he licks again. "Apples," he licks again. "Grapes..." Hazel lifts her head and looks at him, "grapes?" He does her head in. "Mhmmm," he confirms as he dips his head and licks into her again. "And peaches...I love peaches," he says looking up at her with a grin. "You are an idiot," she giggles and pushes his head down. "Stop talking and finish me off," she says taking his Stetson off and placing it on her head. Austin licks into her again and does not stop till she begs him to because she is so sensitive from her climax that explodes in her belly and sweeps over her body till she is shaking.
