Ei had always imagined that the Plane of Euthymia wouldn't be a pleasant place for mortals to be in. It was built purely off of her consciousness, meaning that she had the ability of warping its surroundings as she pleased. Initially, she enjoyed the simplicity of the plane. Just a blank canvas, nice and simple. You had been the one to reprimand her for her horribly tastes of a personal realm. You told her that the realms of the adepti you've visited in Liyue were much more visually appealing. And now, one of her favourite past-times with you is sitting together in this brand new realm she had made, enjoying her favourite treats together.
"The Shogun says that the worst foods are sweets." She said as she watched you flip through one of Miko's books. "I suggest you to now listen to The Shogun," Ei continued, "desserts are the best! And if you get cavities, you can just replace your teeth. I don't see how desserts play any sort of hinderance for the pursuit of eternity..."
At that comment, you laughed. You closed the absolutely monstrous book that you were reading from the Yae Publishing House, turning your attention to Ei. "Replacing my teeth? I don't think that's something mortals can do just randomly..."
"Just grow new teeth." Ei said, acting as if the solution was obvious. "I believe that one of Miko's books revolves around the idea of a human's ability to regenerate body parts." She placed a hand over her chin. "Isn't that true? The same logic goes for when you hurt yourself and start bleeding, correct?"
You just smiled at her child-like curiosity, shaking your head slowly. "No, Ei. Humans can't really replace teeth. However, the regeneration properties are present for skin, you know?"
Ei's eyes widened, looking at you with wonder.
"Also!" You continued, putting up a finger, "I believe that the human liver can regenerate itself as well. The body is such a weird thing, and to be fair, human researchers haven't exactly figured out how it works yet..."
The two of you watched a small bird come along, landing on the picnic blanket that the two of you shared. It hobbled over to a few fruits and vegetables, digging through it with its beak. It turned to Ei, jumping onto her knee, deciding to take a seat there.
Ei was rather fascinated by life. She had forgotten how long she was meditating in the Plane of Euthymia, but she remembered clearly that right after the traveler had managed to open her eyes to the world, everything was so different. Inazuma looked different. And Barbatos and Morax were suddenly nowhere to be found. She really wondered...can life be regenerated?
You knew everything, right? Ei believed that you were one of the most knowledgeable researchers that ever existed. Your fascination for science and practicality, yet still finding joy in the wonders that came with her powers that veered so far from anything scientific. She loved it all. "Can life...regenerate itself?" She asked you tenderly, eyes following the bird as it decided to take off.
"Humans can only live as long as oxygen is being pumped through their system, which is done through blood, and blood flows through the movement of the heart." You answered, drawing a circle in the air with your finger. "So, what do you think Ei?"
"Well, uh..." she looked up, thinking. "I don't think so. I don't think any type of magic is strong enough to get a human's heart to start pumping after it has stopped."
"There's something called CPR, but we can get into that another day..." you murmured.
"CPR?"
"It's complicated..."
Ei quirked an eyebrow, much to your amusement. She leaned back when she felt you flick her forehead. She offered you a small, playful frown. "Y/N, then does that mean after a human dies...they're going to be gone forever?"
You gave a sad smile, nodding. "That's right, Ei. Me, as a mortal, will wither away and die long before you do."
Ei felt her heart sink. That was true with other humans too? Not just her sister and her old kitsune friends? Was your life so fragile that after it was lost...it was never going to come back? And she will be alone again? For...another eternity...?
"But, it's all just science and stuff, you, know?" You said, bringing yourself closer to her face, grinning. "It's super cool, because after someone dies, their body immediately starts decomposing! It's one of the coolest phenomenons ever!" You snickered, an idea starting to form in your head. "Maybe...if you were to keep my body after I die and watch me rot..."
"That's kind of unsanitary." Ei said, looking at you dully, utterly unimpressed.
Laughing, you gave her a small peck on the cheek before falling against her chest, letting her wrap her arms around you. "I'm kidding, but I think it's a cool process for you to watch."
"Absolutely not."
"But even after I pass, Ei..." you shrugged nonchalantly, "I'll be yours in my next life. Then the life after that. I'd be yours for eternity, so you'll never be lonely again. I'll fall in love with you in each and every lifetime!"
"And a thousand more lifetimes after that?" She asked, humming. "I like the sound of that. You're definitely mine for eternity."
