"Huh. Got it. So I'm an idiot." Stefan said. They had just gotten out of the car and were below the Wickery Bridge.
"No. You were the perfect boyfriend. You valued what I wanted, even if it wasn't what you agreed with." Elena reassured him. With a smile on her face.
Then what was it, Elena? Stefan silently thought.
"That's gonna ... take me a minute to wrap my head around." He replied. Because he just didn't understand.
"Fair enough." She shook her head and started walking ahead.
"It's working, y'know." He abruptly said.
She looked back at him. With a slight twinge of hope. "You're remembering?"
"What? No. I meant, the distracting, the sublimating, whatever you want to call it. The urge to feed has ... settled. I'm not ... I'm not hungry anymore." He explained.
Oh. She disappointedly thought.
She's really glad it has. Truly. The thing was though, she didn't know why but she really needed him to remember. Remember him. Remember ... remember her. Them. Badly.
"Good, good." She disappointedly silently said.
"Whatever monster I was capable of being, I could ... see why I was different around you." He stated.
"You were never a monster." She reassured him once more.
One thing Elena had realized about an Amnesia Stefan was that even if he came off as a lot more carefree than his normal self, he was still very guilt-ridden. He just showed that guilt in a lot more of a casual way. To hide the pain. To mask it. She hated the way he talked about himself.
Sure, he may not remember himself but she does. She remembers all his heroics. His heroic personality in general. His kind heart. The fact that he's one of the best people she knows despite being a Ripper & a Vampire.
"Elena, I ... saw my reflection in the mirror today. I was scared of me." He blatantly told her.
"Well, you never scared me." She shrugged.
It was true. It really was. Because she trusted him. As a human, as a vampire. And she always would. Because he'd shown her time & time again that she could.
"The first time I saw you, for what you were..." She further went on. Walking towards him.
"I touched your face like this. And I told you not to hide." She cupped his face in her delicate hands. She was looking at him with a glint in her eyes. Smiling.
Crap. This wasn't supposed to happen. She took in a deep breath. God, his eyes. Why were they so green? And so deep? She was being too obvious and too handsy, too fast. Her hands were getting all clammy. She needed to pull away. Otherwise, she wouldn't be able to ... She slowly pulled away and was about to drop her arms to her sides, before;"Don't." Stefan said in a overwhelmingly husky and low voice. He abruptly grabbed her wrist. He led her hand back to the side of his face. She looked at him one more time with confusion evident in her eyes. How could she even be entertaining this idea let alone actually going along with it? They both moved in closer. It was as if they couldn't help it. More importantly, as if Elena couldn't help it.
She was in too deep. No, she needed to do right by him this time. She couldn't lead him on.
So, the second right before their lips touched:
"I'm with Damon." Elena immediately stopped.
She didn't even pull away. She just stood there. Their bodies practically flushed together. She told herself that she didn't want to reject him too harshly.
"You're with my brother." Stefan lowly spoke. Still not making any attempt to pull away. She weakly nodded.
"And neither of you ... thought that that was something that I should know?" He accusingly asked.
"We weren't ... hiding it from you. It's not that--it's just--sorry." She needed to take a breather.
Until this moment she hadn't realized how confused she still was. She turned around as she put both her hands on the side of her forehead. Elena, you weren't exactly jumping to the opportunity of telling him about your relationship with Damon, either. A little voice in her head told her. Which, she couldn't deny, was right.
"And just like that. The hunger returns." Stefan sarcastically muttered.
"I'm sorry, Stefan, I was just--"
She turned around. Stefan had ... left?
"Stefan? Stefan!" She called out to him.
Only to no avail.
