CHAPTER SIXTEEN: DOUBTS

NOVEMBER 1977

Florence woke to a loud banging on her door. She groggily blinked trying to blink away the sleep from her eyes. There was only a small amount of sunlight seeping its way through the curtains so she assumed it was still very early in the morning.

Her brows furrowed as the banging continued. She looked over toward her roommate hoping the banging had woken her up as well but unfortunately for Florence, it had not. The Slytherin groaned as she pulled the covers off her and swung her legs around to the side of the bed. She quickly searched for her dressing gown to cover herself up. She quickly brushed her fingers through her hair to make herself look decent.

She opened the door to find a first-year. "There is a group of boys waiting for you outside the common room" the first-year blurted before running away.

Florence sighed as she knew exactly who the group of boys were. She was careful to shut the bedroom door as she did not want to wake Amara. She made her way down the staircase and through the common room. On the other side of the door, she found James and Remus wide awake eagerly awaiting her presence and Peter was still half asleep leaning against the wall.

"And to what do I owe this wonderful pleasure of being awoken before the crack of dawn" Florence sarcastically blurted crossing her arms against her chest.

"She hasn't forgotten has she?" Remus queried.

"How could she have forgotten" James exclaimed.

Peter began to open his mouth before Florence cut him off.

"Forgotten what?" Florence shouted becoming frustrated at the boys for waking her up so early.

"Only one of the seventh most important days of the year" James pointed out.

"Which are?"

"Well, Halloween and Christmas then your birthday and then the Marauder's birthdays," James said as if she should know this already.

Florence could not help but let a big smile grow on her face. "You think my birthday is one of the most important times of the year?" she asked.

James nodded but before he could speak Peter cut them off. "Right lovebirds cut it out. We are forgetting our main mission here" he started as he pulled himself off the wall. "It's Sirius's 18th birthday today Flo" he finished informing the girl.

"Stupid baby brain" Florence muttered and rolled her eyes at herself. How could she have forgotten? She was pretty sure the whole school knew with how much Sirius had been going on about it the past week. "So what are you guys doing here then?" she asked curiously.

"You are coming with us to surprise him" James started answering.

"We do it every year but James here insisted that we got you to be part of it this year" Remus finished off.

Florence could not even count on both hands how many times James had made her smile this past week. It was starting to get a bit embarrassing.

"Right then, let's go this place gives me the creeps" Peter announced leading the group away from the dungeons.

Remus ran ahead to catch up with Peter leaving James and Florence trailing behind them.

"That was nice that you thought of me for this" Florence murmured as she grab ahold of James' arm. She felt his bicep tense up underneath her touch and then slowly relax as she left her hand then.

James looked down at the girl and smiled. Neither of them were aware how deep their feelings were starting to build for each other.

The group eventually arrived at the Gryffindor common room. They slowly sneaked their way back into their dorm. Florence noticed the balloons the boys had set up around the birthday boys bed as well as a stack of presents at the end of his bed.
