What We Were

We were pirates,

Swinging from our ship's mast,

And crossing wooden swords.

We had the sunny,

smooth sailing days,

but also the stormy,

furious seas and the rain.

We were knights,

racing against dwindling time,

and saving the villagers we called our friends.

Sometimes we succeeded

and saved the princess,

but other times we failed

and were burned by dragon breath.

We were magicians,

fancy tricks up our sleeves,

disappearing under cloaks of white.

We had the good times

of tricking our parents with cards,

but also the bad times,

when the swords in the box didn't work.

Then we grew up,

and we were soldiers,

defending alongside our brothers,

and remembering days of pirates and dragons.

We could never go back,

but for once that was okay,

because we'd found a purpose greater

than innocent child's play.
