It was three hours into my party at the Xenon club before I finally spotted the guest I had been waiting for all the night.
A gleam had caught my eye. The gleam that only a pair of perfectly polished leather French shoes could produce in a sea of battered Converse, heels and runners. My gaze stuck on the shoes before they slowly trailed upward. If the inappropriately expensive shoes didn't give away who I was looking at, the dark grey formal trousers did. Bloody hell those unfairly form-fitting grey trousers that Miuccia Prada probably only designed because she saw Hayes' arse and thought "yes, let's put that on fucking show!".
"Hayes!"
The critic slowly turned around and exhaled deeply. The fucker had decided to be irritated by my presence at my own bloody birthday party. Or maybe you just drew everyone's bloody attention to him by shouting his name and he didn't care for it. I was too excited by Hayes actually showing up to be genuinely annoyed by his already poor attitude.
"Freddie." Hayes murmured in an irritatingly formal manner, "Hello."
I shook off his icy tone and instead shot him a sunny smile, "You made it."
"Yes, happy birthday."
I didn't really know what physical greeting to go with, but all I knew was that I was going for it. What was the right amount of contact? A touch on the shoulder? Too little. A hug? Too much. A kiss? Preferable but far too fucking much. Automatically my hand went to his waist, and I leant in apprehensively, not exactly knowing where I was going with this. Hayes' eyes widened in alarm, and I was reminded of the time where I went in for a kiss on the cheek two years ago. You know, the time where he freaked out, dove back into the closet, and bolted it shut? Good times.
In the end there was a ridiculously stilted attempt at one of those mutual air kisses. Hayes' cheek merely brushed against mine for a split second before he pulled away.
Lovely.
"Hayes!" Mary exclaimed as she approached us. Her tone betrayed that she missed him, but she hadn't tried to hide it in the first place.
"Mary!" A genuinely happy smile caught at Hayes' lips and I felt thoroughly offended by the sight. "Hello."
Hayes arm wrapped around her waist as she hugged him, and he brushed a proper kiss against her cheek. Nothing like the the cold shit that just transpired between Hayes and I a few seconds ago. I wish he didn't insist on having his walls up for me. We both knew I could pull it down brick by brick, why waste the time?
"Have you had a drink yet?" Mary asked with a warm smile in his direction.
"I've had a few," Hayes glanced down at her, "I don't know if I should—"
"Oh come on! Let's go get a drink." Mary insisted with a hand clasped over Hayes' forearm. "It's been a while."
Hayes chuckled, "Alright, fine."
Hayes didn't put up much of a fight and let Mary lead him off toward the bar. I watched as they had a hushed but animated conversion, and felt my heart twinge slightly at the sight. I couldn't really explain why. I loved that they got on, but was jealous of it too in that moment.
