Legolas. It was the only thought that played on Aragorn's mind. He wasn't sure why but it didn't help that he was sitting across from him, eating breakfast, laughing at something the hobbits had said. He looked gorgeous, anyone could see that. The way this hair was so pristine - a lovely pure colour like barley - and how glistening deep blue eyes that lit up when he smiled, and don't even start about his face structure, his angular elven features shone in the light of the morning.
Of course Aragorn knew these weren't thoughts you think about your friend - even if they are your closest and dearest. This is what troubled Aragorn, what kept him awake and when he did finally sleep his dreams mocked him with pictures of him and Legolas that would never come to be. He didn't fully understand what these feelings meant but he was sure thinking about them a lot.
"Aragorn?" Aragorn looked up, awoken from his thoughts "are you ok mellon nín (my friend), you seem troubled" Legolas asked, his face creased with concern. "I'm fine, I am merely tired" Aragorn answered, although that was far from the truth.
Legolas knew better than to believe him but he decided not to persist, not at the moment anyways. Although it was a struggle he turned his attention away from Aragorn and listened to whatever conversation was being said.

Legolas stood on the balcony of the room he was staying in while in Gondor. Many thoughts consumed him, mostly ones of a certain ranger - or perhaps soon to be king. Legolas chuckled to himself, thinking of the times before the ring, when him. and Aragorn would explore together and get into all sorts of trouble, but Aragon always stayed by his side and he stayed by Aragorn's.
Then his mind wondered to this morning and the troubled look on Aragorn's face. The Elf decided now was as good a time as any to ask Aragorn about what was wrong. Legolas made his way to Aragorn's room and knocked on the door twice.
The door opened to reveal a tired looking Aragorn, but a smile presented itself on his face when he saw his companion. "I wanted to speak with you, may I come in" Legolas asked. Aragorn smiled "of course you can come in, I could use a distraction right now and there's nothing I love more than talking with you, mell edhel (dear elf)." Legolas stepped inside "was that sarcasm?" His face showed amusement and it was clear he was joking. This was a side to him that not many got to see, a side to him that Aragorn adored. "It might have been, but then again it could've not. I guess you'll never know," Legolas laughed, a feeling of relief and calmness washing over him.
The two had made there way over to the sofa and they sat. "So tell me dear Legolas, what is it you wish to talk about," Aragorn inquired. Legolas hesitated, not wanting to intrude hut he was worried for his friend and his secret love. "Aragorn..." He started "what's been troubling you as of late, I know there's something and-" Legolas stopped to compose himself slightly "I'm worried about you." Aragorn smirked at the Elf's concern, knowing that whatever he did he would have to tell Legolas eventually.
But today was not that day. So he lied. "I'm just-" he began "I'm just a bit stressed about the whole coronation thing," what Aragorn said wasn't exactly untrue, he was slightly worried about this but it wasn't the thing on his mind. "You have nothing to worry about mellon nín. You are not even properly king yet but already you are making plans to rebuild the city. You're doing great, and will continue to do great. And I'll always be there if you need me. You have my bow, remember that Estel." Aragorn smiled at Legolas' words and at the use of his Elven name. "I appreciate it, Legolas, hannon le (thank you), for everything." There was a moment of silence. "but," Aragorn continued "I just wish I could get away from it all, even if it were just for a little bit. I so desperately wish for the freedom I felt when we roamed alone, with no one but our horses and eachother."
"So let's," Legolas spoke "just for a little bit, a month at most, let's run away and not think about tomorrow, just today, the here and now. Even if it only for a little bit. It would be my honour to relieve you of this burden you've been carrying," Legolas finished, now looking Aragorn straight in the eye, asking him if he agrees without actually speaking. "We leave tomorrow after lunch, I suggest you get packing tithen adhel (little elf)."
Legolas rolled his eyes at the nickname but a smirk played on his face, he left the room to prepare for the journey ahead. One last adventure with his friend before responsibilities swept them away. One last chance to maybe finally, tell Aragon how he truly feels.
